Umuahia, Abia State |January 15, 2026 —
As Nigeria marks Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the Abia State House of Assembly Chief Whip and member representing Umuahia South State constituency, Hon Emeka Tommy Jacob Obioma, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the men and women of the Nigerian military who have sacrificed their lives in service to the nation.
In a statement issued to newsmen on Thursday, Obioma described the fallen heroes as the nation’s true guardians and called on Nigerians to provide sustained support for military personnel.
“Today is a solemn moment for reflection and gratitude,” Obioma said. “We remember with profound respect the brave men and women who laid down their lives to ensure the unity, peace, and sovereignty of our country. Their sacrifice must never be forgotten.”
Tommy emphasized that Armed Forces Remembrance Day is not merely ceremonial but an opportunity for the nation to acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by military personnel.
“Our soldiers face daily threats in defense of our borders and in maintaining internal security,” he noted. “It is the responsibility of every Nigerian, as well as the government, to ensure they are equipped, trained, and supported to carry out their duties effectively.”
Highlighting the critical role of the military in national unity, the lawmaker reflected on both historical and contemporary contributions of the armed forces.
“From defending Nigeria during times of conflict to participating in peacekeeping and disaster response operations, our military has consistently demonstrated courage, dedication, and patriotism,” he said.
“Honoring them is not just a duty, it is a moral imperative.”
Hon Obioma also urged citizens to show appreciation through practical means, such as supporting programs for veterans and active service members.
“Remembering our fallen heroes is essential, but supporting those who are still serving is equally important,” he stated. “Our military personnel deserve our respect, recognition, and tangible assistance to perform their duties effectively.”
In closing, Obioma called for national unity as a fitting tribute to the sacrifices of the armed forces.
“The sacrifices of our soldiers remind us that the strength of Nigeria lies in solidarity, compassion, and commitment to the greater good,” he said. “Let us honor their legacy by standing together as one nation, committed to supporting those who protect us.”
Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves as a reminder of the bravery, dedication, and sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel.
