Nigeria at 66: “The Task Of Nation-building Belongs to All Of Us” — Hon Anderson Akaliro

Umuahia, Abia State| October 1, 2026 —

The Member representing Umuahia North (Ohuhu) State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has felicitated with Nigerians on the occasion of the nation’s Independence Day, calling for renewed patriotism, unity and collective commitment towards building a stronger, more prosperous and united Nigeria.

Akaliro, in a goodwill message to mark the anniversary, described Independence Day as an important moment for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey since independence, celebrate its resilience and renew their commitment to the ideals of nationhood, justice, peace and sustainable development.

He noted that Nigeria’s strength lies largely in its diversity, stressing that the country’s numerous ethnic, cultural, religious and regional identities should be regarded as sources of strength rather than grounds for division. According to him, meaningful national development requires citizens to rise above sectional interests and work together in the collective interest of the nation.

The lawmaker urged Nigerians to cultivate a stronger sense of patriotism by contributing positively to their communities and supporting initiatives that promote peace, good governance, economic growth and social development. He maintained that the responsibility of building the Nigeria of collective aspiration should not be left to government alone, but must be embraced by citizens, institutions, traditional leaders, professionals, young people and other stakeholders.

Akaliro also emphasised the importance of responsible citizenship, urging Nigerians to uphold the rule of law, respect one another and remain committed to peaceful coexistence. He stressed that national progress is strengthened when citizens demonstrate tolerance, accountability and a willingness to contribute meaningfully to the development of their communities.

Reflecting on the challenges confronting the nation, the Abia lawmaker acknowledged that Nigeria still has significant milestones to achieve in areas such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment, security and economic development. He, however, expressed optimism that with visionary leadership, effective institutions and active citizen participation, the country can overcome its challenges and unlock its vast potential.

He called on political leaders and public officials at all levels to remain responsive to the needs of the people, He further advocated policies and programmes that would improve the quality of life of Nigerians, create opportunities for young people and strengthen the foundations of inclusive economic growth.

Akaliro particularly urged the younger generation to take an active role in nation-building, describing Nigerian youths as indispensable to the country’s future. He encouraged them to pursue education, entrepreneurship, innovation and other productive ventures while remaining committed to integrity, hard work and responsible citizenship.

The lawmaker also called for greater cooperation among the various arms and levels of government, noting that sustainable development requires collaboration rather than competition. He said that when federal, state and local governments work in harmony with communities and development partners, the impact of public policies and projects would be more meaningful and enduring.

As Nigeria commemorates another Independence Day, Akaliro urged citizens to remain hopeful and committed to the nation’s progress despite existing challenges. He said the country’s journey since independence demonstrates the resilience of its people and their capacity to overcome difficulties when united by a common purpose.

He therefore called on Nigerians to use the occasion not only to celebrate the nation but also to renew their collective pledge to build a Nigeria where justice, peace, opportunity and prosperity are accessible to all.

“Independence Day reminds us of our shared history, our common identity and the responsibility we all bear for the Nigeria we desire. The task of nation-building belongs to all of us. By working together, respecting our diversity and putting the national interest above narrow considerations, we can build a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria for present and future generations,” Akaliro said.

He wished Nigerians at home and abroad a peaceful and memorable Independence Day celebration, while praying for continued peace, stability and prosperity across the country.
