Hon. Obioma Celebrates Independence, Calls for Renewed Patriotism and National Unity

Umuahia, Abia State| October 1, 2026 —

The Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, Hon. Emeka Tommy Obioma, has felicitated with Nigerians on the occasion of the nation’s Independence Day, calling for renewed patriotism, national unity and collective commitment to the growth and development of Nigeria.

Obioma, in his Independence Day message, described the anniversary as an important moment for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey since independence, celebrate its resilience and reaffirm their shared responsibility towards building a more peaceful, prosperous and united nation.

He noted that Nigeria’s independence represented a landmark chapter in the country’s history, stressing that the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers and successive generations of Nigerians should continue to inspire citizens to work towards a stronger and more cohesive society.

According to him, the challenges confronting the nation can only be effectively addressed when citizens, irrespective of ethnic, religious, political or regional affiliations, place the collective interest of Nigeria above narrow considerations.

The lawmaker called on Nigerians to embrace the ideals of patriotism, tolerance, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship, stressing that sustainable national development requires the active participation of everyone.

Obioma also emphasised the importance of good governance and effective representation in advancing the aspirations of the Nigerian people. He maintained that public office holders have a responsibility to remain accountable, responsive and committed to improving the lives of citizens through policies and programmes that promote inclusive development.

He urged Nigerians to continue to support initiatives that strengthen education, healthcare, infrastructure, youth development and economic opportunities, describing these areas as critical pillars for building a nation where citizens can live with dignity and confidence in the future.

The Umuahia South legislator further appealed to the younger generation to see themselves as important stakeholders in the Nigerian project, encouraging them to acquire knowledge, develop their talents and contribute positively to their communities rather than allowing political, ethnic or religious differences to divide them.

He said the future of Nigeria would be determined by the quality of choices citizens make today, adding that patriotism should go beyond words and celebrations to include respect for the law, protection of public property, peaceful participation in democratic processes and a commitment to the common good.

Obioma equally commended Nigerians for their resilience and determination in the face of the various challenges confronting the country, expressing optimism that with unity of purpose, visionary leadership and sustained commitment to national development, Nigeria would continue to make meaningful progress.

He called on political leaders at all levels to continue to work together in the interest of the people, stressing that the strength of the country lies in its diversity and the ability of its citizens to transform that diversity into an instrument of national cohesion and development.

The Chief Whip urged his constituents in Umuahia South and Nigerians across the country to use the Independence anniversary as an opportunity to renew their faith in Nigeria and contribute their quota to building a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive nation.

He reaffirmed his commitment to effective legislative representation and people-oriented initiatives in Umuahia South, assuring his constituents that he would continue to support programmes and policies capable of improving their welfare and creating opportunities for sustainable development.

As Nigeria marks another year of independence, Obioma urged citizens to remain hopeful and united, stressing that the task of building the nation belongs to everyone.

He wished Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Independence Day celebration, while calling for a renewed spirit of patriotism, mutual respect and collective responsibility in the pursuit of a better Nigeria.
