The Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, Hon. Emeka Jacob Obioma, has celebrated the women of Ohiya Autonomous Community for their unity, resilience and sustained commitment to the growth and development of their community, urging them to continue supporting the administration of Gov. Alex Otti and the Labour Party.
Obioma made the call while speaking at the 2026 August Meeting of the women of Ohiya Autonomous Community, held at the Ohiya Primary School field, where he was accompanied by the Director-General of the Abia State Orientation Agency, Lady Ure Abazie. The gathering provided an opportunity for the lawmaker to interact with the women, appreciate their contributions to community development and reaffirm his commitment to effective grassroots representation.
Addressing the gathering, Obioma described Ohiya as an important component of his constituency and a community that remains particularly dear to his heart. He emphasised that his representation is anchored on the conviction that every community within Umuahia South deserves purposeful attention, responsive leadership and tangible developmental interventions.
The lawmaker recalled that Ohiya was among the first communities to benefit from one of his constituency projects within his first 100 days in office. According to him, the intervention was a demonstration of his determination to ensure that his mandate translates into meaningful benefits for the people rather than remaining confined to legislative engagements.
Obioma commended the women for preserving the tradition of the August Meeting and for sustaining the bonds of unity and communal solidarity that have historically characterised Ohiya. He noted that women occupy a pivotal position in the social and economic advancement of communities, stressing that their collective strength, wisdom and commitment remain indispensable to sustainable development.
He consequently appealed to the women to continue to support Gov. Alex Otti and the Labour Party, expressing confidence that sustained cooperation between the government, elected representatives and grassroots communities would create an enabling environment for more developmental achievements. He urged them to remain united and constructive in their engagement with political and community affairs.
The Chief Whip also acknowledged the contributions of Lady Ure Abazie to the development of Ohiya, describing her as a daughter of the community who remains genuinely concerned about its progress and welfare. He praised her for maintaining a strong connection with the people and for using her position to encourage initiatives capable of strengthening the community.
Earlier, Lady Ure Abazie commended the women of Ohiya for sustaining the August Meeting tradition, describing it as an important platform for fostering unity, dialogue and collective responsibility. She encouraged the women to continue working together in the interest of peace, progress and the overall development of Ohiya Autonomous Community.
Lady Ure also paid tribute to her aged mother, Lolo Louis Olaocha Abazie, who served the women of Ohiya for several years as their President and made notable contributions to their welfare and advancement. She acknowledged her mother's legacy of service and expressed her continued commitment to supporting initiatives that promote the wellbeing and development of Ohiya women.
Following the August Meeting at the Ohiya Primary School field, Obioma and Lady Ure proceeded to the Uwadileke family in Umueze, Ohiya, where they joined the family to celebrate the retirement of Mrs. Nwanganga Uwadileke from active women's activism in Ohiya Community.
The visit provided an opportunity to honour Mrs. Uwadileke for her years of dedication to women's affairs and community service. Obioma joined the family in recognising her contributions, underscoring the importance of appreciating individuals whose lives have been devoted to strengthening their communities and advancing the welfare of others.
The day's engagements by Hon. Obioma reflected his continued emphasis on grassroots interaction, community development and recognition of selfless service. His participation in the August Meeting and the subsequent visit to the Uwadileke family further reinforced his message that effective representation goes beyond legislative duties and encompasses meaningful relationships with constituents, support for community initiatives and appreciation of those who have contributed to the collective good.
For the women of Ohiya, the gathering was not merely an annual social tradition but also a reaffirmation of the enduring bonds between the community and its representatives. Obioma's assurances of continued commitment, coupled with his appeal for unity and support for the Otti administration and Labour Party, further underscored the importance of collective participation in advancing the development aspirations of Ohiya and Umuahia South.
