As Nigerians commemorate Democracy Day, the Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, Hon. Emeka Tommy Obioma, has called on leaders across the country to ensure that democracy translates into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens through justice, development, and renewed hope.
In a Democracy Day message issued to newsmen, Obioma described the occasion as a significant milestone in Nigeria's political history and a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by countless patriots who fought for the enthronement and sustenance of democratic governance. He noted that the struggles and sacrifices associated with the June 12 movement laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today and should continue to inspire leaders to govern with integrity and accountability.
According to the lawmaker, democracy is not merely about conducting elections or occupying public offices, but about creating a society where citizens have access to opportunities, justice, security, and improved standards of living. He stressed that the success of any democratic system should be measured by its ability to positively impact the lives of the people and provide solutions to their daily challenges.
Obioma emphasized that justice remains the cornerstone of any thriving democracy, noting that sustainable peace and national progress can only be achieved when citizens are treated fairly and the rule of law is respected. He urged public office holders to remain committed to upholding constitutional principles and ensuring that government institutions serve the interests of the people without prejudice or discrimination.
The Umuahia South rep. further stated that development must remain a central objective of governance at all levels. He called for increased investment in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and youth empowerment, arguing that meaningful development is essential for reducing poverty, creating jobs, and fostering economic growth. He maintained that Nigerians deserve a democratic system that delivers visible improvements in their quality of life and opens new opportunities for future generations.
Speaking on the need to restore hope among citizens, Obioma observed that many Nigerians continue to face economic and social challenges that have tested their resilience and confidence in public institutions. He urged leaders to adopt policies that prioritize the welfare of the people and rebuild trust through transparency, responsiveness, and people-oriented governance. According to him, hope remains a vital ingredient for national progress and must be nurtured through purposeful leadership and responsible public service.
The lawmaker also paid tribute to the heroes and heroines of Nigeria's democratic struggle, whose courage and sacrifices helped secure the democratic space the country enjoys today. He said their legacy should serve as a constant reminder that democracy requires vigilance, active participation, and a collective commitment to protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens.
"As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us reflect on the true meaning of democratic governance and renew our commitment to building a nation where justice prevails, development reaches every community, and hope remains alive in the hearts of our people," Obioma stated.
"The promise of democracy can only be fulfilled when government works for the people and when every Nigerian has a genuine opportunity to thrive."
He concluded by expressing optimism about Nigeria's future, urging citizens to remain united and actively engaged in the democratic process while working together to build a stronger, more prosperous, and more inclusive nation for generations to come.
