The Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Obi Aguocha, has called on Nigerians and leaders at all levels to recommit themselves to the ideals of justice, equity, and respect for constitutional rights as the nation commemorates Democracy Day.
In a statement marking the June 12 celebration, Aguocha described Democracy Day as a significant reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots and pro-democracy advocates whose courage and determination paved the way for the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today. He noted that while the nation has made considerable progress since the return to democratic governance, there remains an urgent need to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that governance remains firmly rooted in the principles of accountability, transparency, and the rule of law.
The federal lawmaker emphasized that democracy cannot flourish where constitutional rights are undermined or where citizens feel excluded from the benefits and protections guaranteed by law. According to him, the true essence of democracy lies not merely in periodic elections but in the consistent protection of fundamental freedoms, equal treatment under the law, and the creation of opportunities that allow every citizen to participate meaningfully in national development.
Aguocha stated that justice and equity must remain at the heart of Nigeria's democratic journey, stressing that a nation can only achieve lasting peace and stability when fairness is institutionalized and citizens have confidence in the impartiality of public institutions. He argued that democratic governance thrives when leaders place the welfare of the people above personal interests and when public policies are designed to address the needs and aspirations of all segments of society.
Reflecting on the significance of June 12, the lawmaker paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria's democratic struggle who endured persecution, imprisonment, and personal sacrifice in pursuit of a freer and more democratic nation.
