The Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has called on leaders at all levels of government to ensure that democracy translates into meaningful benefits for citizens, stating that the true essence of democratic governance lies in its ability to deliver hope, opportunity, and prosperity to every Nigerian.
In a statement issued to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Akaliro described June 12 as a historic landmark in Nigeria's political evolution and a symbol of the sacrifices made by courageous patriots who fought tirelessly for democratic governance. He noted that the significance of the day goes beyond remembrance, serving as an opportunity for leaders and citizens alike to reflect on the nation's democratic journey and recommit themselves to the values of justice, accountability, and service to the people.
According to the lawmaker, democracy should not be viewed merely as a system for electing leaders but as a vehicle for improving the quality of life of citizens. He stressed that democratic governance must create an environment where individuals have access to opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship, and personal advancement. He added that when citizens are empowered to pursue their aspirations, democracy becomes a catalyst for sustainable development and national progress.
Akaliro emphasized that one of the greatest responsibilities of government is to inspire hope among the people through purposeful leadership and people-oriented policies. He observed that many Nigerians continue to face economic and social challenges that require urgent attention, noting that leaders must remain committed to implementing programmes and initiatives that address poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and inadequate infrastructure. He maintained that restoring confidence in public institutions begins with delivering tangible results that improve the daily lives of citizens.
The Umuahia North rep. further stated that prosperity can only be achieved when government creates conditions that encourage investment, innovation, and productivity. He advocated greater support for small and medium-scale enterprises, agricultural development, youth empowerment, and human capital development as critical pathways to economic growth and shared prosperity. According to him, inclusive economic policies are essential to ensuring that the benefits of development reach every segment of society.
Speaking on the importance of democratic values, Akaliro called for stronger institutions, greater transparency in governance, and unwavering respect for the rule of law. He noted that democracy flourishes when public officials remain accountable to the people and when citizens are actively involved in the governance process. He urged Nigerians to continue participating constructively in civic affairs and to support efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions across the country.
