June 12: Democracy Thrives When Citizens Are Heard and The Govt is Sincere — OAU

Prominent philanthropist, international businessman, and Founder of the OAU Foundation, Hon Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU), has called for greater citizen participation in governance, stating that democracy can only flourish when the voices of the people are heard, govt is sincere and citizens are genuinely empowered to contribute to national development.

In a statement issued to commemorate Nigeria's Democracy Day, OAU described June 12 as a defining moment in the nation's political history and a symbol of the resilience, courage, and determination of Nigerians who fought for democratic governance. He noted that the significance of the day extends beyond historical remembrance, serving as a reminder of the collective responsibility to strengthen democratic institutions and promote inclusive governance.

According to him, democracy derives its strength from the active involvement of citizens in the affairs of their communities and the nation at large. He stressed that when governments create avenues for meaningful engagement and listen to the concerns of the people, public trust is strengthened and governance becomes more effective. He added that sustainable development can only be achieved when citizens are not treated as spectators but as active partners in the democratic process.

The philanthropist emphasized that empowering citizens through quality education, economic opportunities, skills acquisition, and access to information remains critical to the growth of any democratic society. He observed that a population equipped with the necessary tools to improve their lives is better positioned to contribute positively to national progress and hold leaders accountable. He maintained that democracy must create opportunities for individuals to realize their potential regardless of their background or social status.

OAU further called on leaders at all levels to prioritize policies that promote social inclusion, transparency, and equal opportunities for all citizens. He argued that democracy should not merely be measured by the conduct of elections but by the extent to which governance responds to the aspirations of the people. According to him, governments must remain committed to delivering development, protecting fundamental rights, and ensuring that no segment of society feels marginalized or excluded.

Reflecting on the current challenges facing the nation, Onyekwere Akym Uche urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the democratic process. He acknowledged the economic and social difficulties confronting many citizens but expressed confidence that with visionary leadership, collective responsibility, and active civic participation, the country can overcome its challenges and achieve greater prosperity. He encouraged citizens to remain engaged in governance by contributing constructive ideas and holding public officials accountable through lawful and democratic means.

The OAU Foundation founder also paid tribute to the heroes and heroines of Nigeria's democratic struggle whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the freedoms enjoyed today. He noted that their legacy should inspire present and future generations to defend democratic values and uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and national unity.

"June 12 reminds us that democracy belongs to the people," OAU stated. "A truly democratic society is one where citizens are heard, respected, and empowered to contribute to decision-making. Democracy thrives when government listens to the people and when citizens are given the opportunities and resources needed to succeed. Together, we must continue to build a nation where every voice matters and every citizen has a stake in our collective future."

He concluded by urging Nigerians to embrace unity, peaceful coexistence, and active participation in nation-building, expressing optimism that the country's democratic journey will continue to yield greater progress, stability, and prosperity for all.
