The member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency, Obi Aguocha, has dismissed recent criticisms attributed to an aspirant for the same federal seat, Chinedum Orji, stating that he would not be drawn into what he described as unnecessary distractions ahead of future political contests.
Reacting to the remarks, Aguocha stated that he has no intention of engaging in prolonged exchanges with individuals he believes are merely seeking relevance. He stressed that his primary focus remains on delivering quality representation and improving the welfare of his constituents rather than trading words in the media space.
“I won’t waste my saliva responding to every comment thrown my way,” Aguocha said. “The young man enjoys chasing clout with my name because it keeps him in the conversation. But governance is not about noise making; it is about impact and service.”
The federal lawmaker further took a swipe at Orji’s political record, accusing him of failing to utilize past opportunities to reposition Abia State for meaningful development. Aguocha referenced what he termed “the locust years,” suggesting that the electorate remains fully aware of previous administrations and their performance.
“I am not surprised he described our efforts as delusional,” Aguocha continued. “He does not understand what it means to truly serve the people. After squandering eight years of opportunity to reposition Abia, he still resurfaces, assuming that Ndi Abia and the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia have forgotten.”
Aguocha also downplayed Orji’s current political ambition, emphasizing that the contest for party tickets remains open and competitive. According to him, several credible aspirants within Orji’s political party may ultimately determine the outcome of the primaries.
“I have no contest with him at this stage,” he said. “He is merely an aspirant jostling for his party’s ticket, which he may not even secure. There are more credible individuals in that race, and the decision lies with his party.”
The lawmaker went on to advise that rather than engaging in public criticism, Orji should focus on rebuilding his political image and convincing his party stakeholders of his suitability for the ticket. He maintained that engaging in personal attacks would not substitute for political credibility or grassroots acceptance.
“One would expect him to channel the energy he is using to attack me into salvaging what remains of his public image,” Aguocha added. “If he truly seeks to serve, he should present himself to his party and the people with humility and substance.”
Reaffirming his commitment to his constituents, Aguocha concluded by reiterating that he would not be sidetracked by what he described as “tantrums,” insisting that his attention remains fixed on legislative responsibilities and ongoing developmental initiatives within Ikwuano/Umuahia.
“So you see, joining issues with him now would amount to wasting valuable time,” he said. “I am focused on the mandate given to me by the people, and I will not be distracted by someone who may not even be on the ballot.”
