Abia begins construction of first LG General Hospital

Stakeholders at the event

Residents of Ohanku Ndoki in the Ukwa East Local Government Area were full of appreciation during the weekend as the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, laid the foundation of an ultra-modern general hospital in the area, the first in the community.

The governor told the residents that the project was a fulfilment of his administration’s commitment to providing quality healthcare to every nook and cranny of the state, noting that the establishment of the hospital aligns with his vision of building a responsive and inclusive health system capable of meeting the needs of rural communities.

Otti appreciated Eze Chibuzor Chinyere for giving the state a befitting piece of land for the hospital project,

The land donor and host traditional ruler, Eze Chibuzor Chinyere, said, “I am excited because God sent Governor Alex Otti to resurrect healthcare here. The healthcare in Ukwa East has been dead. We have a health centre, but it is not existing. Only cockroaches, rats and reptiles are inhabiting the place.

“Then God remembered us through Otti to build a general hospital for this community. Do you know how many lives that are going to be saved by this hospital? It is going to reduce deaths; this is not a health centre, but a general hospital”.

On the 100 plots of land he donated for the project, the royal father explained that he initially bought the land for a factory and other initiatives, adding that life is much important.

“When I saw the need, I decided to give out 100 plots, This gesture is to secure the lives of my people and as the king, I believe that lives of my people are more important; and God brought a man; this is just his two years in office. Just imagine what we happen in the next six years to this community and the entire Abia State,” he added.

He expressed optimism that the hospital will attract other investments into the community.

“This is a general hospital and it will attract at ancillary services. So many people are going to open pharmacy stores around, hotels will open for people to lodge in, and more houses are to be built for people to rent. The hospital is going to bring transformation and life will come back to this community. My people, particularly youths, are happy and they will protect the facility”.

The member representing Ukwa East and West in the 10th federal Assembly, Chris Nkwonta expressed happiness that the people of Ukwa East are being remembered for a project of such size and dimension.

“I want to encourage the governor to keep doing what he is doing. This is good. I am a member of the All Progressives Congress and Otti is a member of Labour Party, it is not about which party you belong to, but about attracting development for the people. As a member of the House of Representatives, whatever I can do to help to ensure that this project is completed and begins to function, I will do that.”

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information who is from the area, Prince Okey Kanu expressed his happiness over the project.

The state Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, said, “This area was without health facilities and when Otti heard this, he made a firm promise that he will place a world class General Hospital here”.

Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara commended Otti for prioritizing healthcare infrastructure above political party and political linings, stating that history will remember Otti’s administration kindly.
