The Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency and Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Obioma, has deepened his grassroots engagement with an interactive and appreciation visit to the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Umuahia South Chapter, underscoring his commitment to inclusive governance and workers’ welfare.
The visit, which drew a wide spectrum of local government officials and staff, was marked by a warm reception led by the Mayor of Umuahia South Local Government Area, Hon. Engr. Chinedu Enwereuzo. He was joined by the Deputy Mayor, Hon. Barr. Enyinnaya Nwosu; the Chief of Staff to the Mayor, Dr. Callistus Agomuo; councillors; and members of staff of the local government. Hon. Obioma was accompanied by Hon. Chinwendu Cesser, the Member representing Isiala Ngwa South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly.
In his welcome address, Mayor Enwereuzo praised Hon. Obioma for maintaining close contact with the grassroots, describing the visit as a reflection of responsible leadership and a practical demonstration of gratitude to the workforce that sustains local governance. He noted that such engagements help strengthen trust between elected representatives and the people they serve.
Speaking on behalf of the workers, the Chairman of NULGE, Umuahia South Chapter, Comrade Alozie, expressed appreciation to the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for the consistent and prompt payment of salaries, which he said has restored dignity and confidence among workers. He also thanked Hon. Obioma for identifying with local government employees and formally presented a request for the provision of a borehole to address pressing sanitation challenges within the council premises.
In his remarks, Hon. Chinwendu Cesser reflected on his longstanding association with Hon. Obioma, describing him as a servant-leader whose humility and accessibility distinguish his public service. He commended the leadership of the NULGE chapter, observing that effective organisation and cooperation between labour leaders and government officials were evident in Umuahia South.
On his part, Hon. Obioma conveyed his gratitude to the mayoral leadership, councillors, and workers for the warm reception accorded him. He stressed that while local government employees may operate outside the arena of partisan politics, they remain influential stakeholders in the democratic process and played a significant role in the political transformation currently unfolding in Abia State.
“I am here primarily to say thank you to the workers of Umuahia South Local Government. I have carefully listened to your request, and I want to assure you that a borehole will be provided to improve sanitary conditions for the workforce,” Hon. Obioma stated, drawing applause from the audience.
The lawmaker also acknowledged the presence of the Umuahia South Coordinator of Abia Arise, Hon. Dennis Anokwuru, explaining that Abia Arise is a grassroots-driven movement focused on mobilising support for Gov Alex Otti’s reform agenda. He encouraged workers and community stakeholders to identify with initiatives that promote continuity, accountability, and sustainable development in the state.
In his address, Hon. Anokwuru described Abia Arise as a unifying platform designed to consolidate the gains of the current administration, urging well-meaning Abians to align with the movement in the collective interest of progress.
Hon. Obioma concluded the visit by reaffirming his open-door policy, assuring workers that his office remains accessible and responsive to their concerns and aspirations. He thanked them for their impressive turnout and dedication to service.
The engagement ended on a solemn note with a closing prayer offered by the Umuahia South Head of Service, Mrs. Landis Isiaku, who prayed for continued peace, cooperation, and development within the local government and Abia State at large.
