The Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, Hon. Emeka Tommy Obioma, has felicitated with teachers across Umuahia South and Abia State on the occasion of the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, commending their dedication, resilience and invaluable contributions to the educational and socio-economic development of the state.
Obioma, in a goodwill message marking the annual celebration, described teachers as indispensable architects of the future, whose influence extends far beyond the classroom. He acknowledged that through the transmission of knowledge, mentorship, character formation and moral guidance, teachers play a pivotal role in preparing children and young people to become responsible citizens and productive contributors to society.
The lawmaker particularly celebrated teachers in Umuahia South for their steadfast commitment to nurturing pupils and students despite the challenges associated with the teaching profession. He noted that the quality of education available to the younger generation is substantially dependent on the dedication, competence and professionalism of educators, stressing that teachers remain central to the advancement of communities and the development of human capital.
According to Obioma, the celebration provides an opportunity for society to reflect on the sacrifices made by teachers and the need to create an enabling environment for them to excel. He maintained that meaningful investment in education must encompass not only school infrastructure and learning materials, but also teacher welfare, capacity building, professional development and improved conditions of service.
“On this World Teachers’ Day, I celebrate the hardworking and dedicated teachers of Umuahia South and Abia State. Your commitment to educating, mentoring and moulding our children is a service whose impact cannot be measured merely by statistics. Every professional, leader and responsible citizen has, at some point, benefited from the knowledge and guidance of a teacher. Your patience, sacrifice and commitment continue to shape the future of our communities,” Obioma said.
He further stressed that the development of Umuahia South and Abia State is intrinsically linked to the quality of education available to the people, urging all stakeholders to regard teachers as strategic partners in the development process. He called for sustained collaboration among government, educators, parents, communities and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen the educational system and ensure that every child has access to quality learning opportunities.
“We must continue to support our teachers and give them the recognition, respect and professional environment they deserve. As a representative of the people, I remain committed to initiatives that promote education, empower our young people and create opportunities for them to fulfil their potential. A society that invests wisely in its teachers is investing in generations yet unborn, and I believe Umuahia South and Abia State must continue to prioritise education as a foundation for sustainable development,” he added.
The Abia State lawmaker also encouraged teachers to embrace continuous learning, innovation and emerging technologies, noting that the rapidly changing educational landscape requires educators to constantly update their knowledge and pedagogical skills. He urged them to remain committed to the principles of integrity, discipline, compassion and professionalism, which he said are essential to effective teaching and character formation.
Obioma reiterated that education remains one of the most potent instruments for transforming communities, reducing inequality and unlocking the potential of young people. He therefore called on parents and community leaders in Umuahia South to complement the efforts of teachers by taking an active interest in the education, character and overall development of their children and wards.
He expressed appreciation to teachers across Umuahia South and Abia State for their years of service and sacrifice, assuring them that their contributions to society would continue to receive recognition. Obioma wished them a rewarding World Teachers’ Day celebration and urged them to remain steadfast in their noble profession, stressing that the seeds they plant through education today would ultimately yield a more knowledgeable, responsible and prosperous generation tomorrow.
