Soul Tonic: The Unchanging Nature of God — By Hon Dr. Anthony Nwaubani

Scripture: Malachi 3:6

“For I am the LORD, I do not change; therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.” This bible verse reveals a fundamental attribute of God: He is immutable. Human beings change with time, circumstances, emotions and experiences, but God remains constant. His character, promises, purposes and love are not subject to the instability that often characterizes human life. Because God does not change, christians can confidently build their faith upon Him, knowing that the One they trusted yesterday remains trustworthy today and will remain so tomorrow. The unchanging nature of God is therefore one of the most reassuring truths revealed in the Bible.

The immutability of God means that His character remains eternally consistent. He does not become more loving, less righteous, more powerful or less faithful with the passage of time. Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent.” His holiness remains perfect, His wisdom remains infinite, and His righteousness remains unquestionable. While people may make promises and later change their minds, God does not act according to fleeting emotions or external pressures. His nature is eternally established, giving humanity a firm foundation upon which to place its trust.

God's unchanging nature also assures us that His promises remain dependable. The bible repeatedly demonstrates that God keeps His word even when circumstances appear to contradict what He has promised. Hebrews 13:8 declares, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” This means that the faithfulness demonstrated throughout biblical history is still relevant to believers today. The God who provided for Abraham, strengthened Moses, protected Daniel and delivered Israel remains the same God who watches over His people. His methods may differ according to His wisdom, but His character and faithfulness remain constant.

The unchanging nature of God is particularly comforting during seasons of uncertainty. Life is filled with changes that are often beyond human control. Relationships may change, opportunities may disappear, plans may fail, and circumstances may shift unexpectedly. Yet, in the midst of these uncertainties, God remains steadfast. Psalm 102:27 says, “But You are the same, and Your years will have no end.” When everything around us seems unstable, we can anchor our hearts in the stability of God. His presence provides assurance when the future is unclear, and His word gives direction when we do not know which path to take.

God's immutability also demonstrates that His love is not dependent on constantly changing human circumstances. His love is rooted in His very nature. Jeremiah 31:3 says, “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.” Although human affection can sometimes be conditional, God's love is steadfast and enduring. This does not mean that God approves of everything we do. Rather, His unchanging love calls us to repentance, transformation and deeper fellowship with Him. Even when we fail, His desire is to restore us and lead us back into His purpose.

Understanding that God does not change should influence the way believers live. In a world where values, opinions and standards can shift rapidly, Christians are called to remain grounded in God's truth. Isaiah 40:8 declares, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” God's Word provides an enduring standard for faith and conduct. Rather than allowing every cultural trend or temporary circumstance to determine our convictions, we should seek to align our lives with the eternal principles of Scripture. The stability of God should produce stability in our faith, character and decisions.

Conclusively, the unchanging nature of God gives us confidence, hope and peace. We may change, our circumstances may change, and the world around us may change, but God remains the same. James 1:17 describes Him as the One “with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” Therefore, when we face uncertainty, we can look beyond our changing circumstances to the unchanging God who holds our lives in His hands. Malachi 3:6 reminds us that because the Lord does not change, His covenant mercy remains dependable. May this truth strengthen our faith, deepen our trust and encourage us to remain steadfast in our walk with God, knowing that the One who has been faithful from the beginning will remain faithful forever.
