Hon Emeka Obioma Sunday Nuggets: God as Our Refuge and Strength

Scripture: Psalm 46:1

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” This verse reminds us that God is not distant from the realities of human life. He is a dependable shelter when difficulties arise and a source of strength when our own abilities become insufficient. Life can bring seasons of uncertainty, disappointment, loss and pressure, but the presence of God gives us confidence that we do not have to confront these challenges alone.

To understand God as our refuge is to recognize Him as a secure place of protection. A refuge is a place where someone runs for safety when danger threatens. In the same way, God invites His people to seek shelter in Him rather than being consumed by fear. Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” Trusting God as our refuge does not mean that difficulties will never come. Instead, it means that when they come, we have somewhere secure to turn. His presence gives us peace even when circumstances around us remain unsettled.

God is also our strength when our human strength reaches its limits. There are moments when determination, experience and resources are simply not enough to carry us through a difficult season. Isaiah 40:29 declares, “He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength.” God does not condemn us for acknowledging our limitations. Rather, He invites us to depend on Him. When we surrender our weaknesses to God, His grace enables us to continue moving forward even when we feel exhausted or overwhelmed.

The strength that comes from God is not merely physical. It includes emotional, spiritual and mental resilience. Paul experienced seasons of weakness and hardship, yet he discovered that God's grace was sufficient for him. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, the Lord said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” This teaches us that weakness does not disqualify us from God's purpose. Sometimes, it is through our weakest moments that we discover the depth of His sustaining power. God can transform our limitations into opportunities to experience His grace in remarkable ways.

God's role as our refuge becomes particularly meaningful during times of trouble. Psalm 91:1-2 says, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.’” Trust requires more than simply acknowledging that God exists. It involves deliberately placing our confidence in His character and promises. When fear tells us that everything is falling apart, faith reminds us that God remains sovereign. When uncertainty clouds our vision, His Word reminds us that He is still present and faithful.

Seeking God as our refuge should also become a daily practice rather than something we do only during emergencies. Through prayer, worship, meditation on Scripture and fellowship with God, we continually strengthen our relationship with Him. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages believers not to be anxious but to bring their concerns to God through prayer and thanksgiving. The result is a peace that surpasses human understanding. When God becomes our first place of refuge, we learn to respond to difficulties with faith rather than panic, wisdom rather than desperation, and hope rather than despair.

In summary, Psalm 46:1 calls us to develop an unwavering confidence in God's presence and power. He is our refuge when we are threatened, our strength when we are weak, and our help when we are troubled. Psalm 46:10 further reminds us, “Be still, and know that I am God.” This invitation calls us to quiet our hearts and remember who is in control. Whatever challenges we may encounter, we can face them with courage because our security does not depend entirely on our circumstances. God remains our safe place, our source of strength and our ever-present help. When we make Him our refuge, we discover a peace that circumstances cannot easily take away and a strength that enables us to persevere.
