Hon. Onyekwere Akym Uche,
businessman, politician and founder of the OAU Foundation, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to grassroots empowerment, community development and initiatives that create sustainable opportunities for the people.
Akym, while speaking on his continued engagement with grassroots communities and supporters, said his passion for service is anchored on the conviction that genuine development must be people-centred and must extend beyond the corridors of political power to communities where the needs of the people are most immediate.
According to him, the grassroots remain the foundation of every thriving society, stressing that meaningful leadership requires constant engagement with the people, an understanding of their challenges and a willingness to provide practical interventions that can improve their standard of living.
“My commitment to the grassroots is not seasonal and it is not driven by political convenience. I believe that leadership is fundamentally about service, and that service must be felt by the people. Wherever there is an opportunity to empower a person, support a family or contribute to the development of a community, I believe we should be willing to act,” OAU said.
The philanthropist noted that empowerment should not be restricted to the distribution of material assistance, but should encompass initiatives that equip people with the knowledge, skills, resources and opportunities required to become self-reliant and productive members of society.
He maintained that sustainable empowerment is particularly important in addressing the challenges confronting young people and vulnerable members of communities. According to him, providing people with opportunities to develop their potential can create a multiplier effect that benefits families, communities and the wider society.
“We must move beyond temporary solutions and focus on interventions that give people the capacity to stand on their own. When you empower an individual, you are not only helping that person. You are strengthening a family, improving a community and contributing to the economic development of society,” he stated.
Akym also expressed appreciation to his numerous supporters, community stakeholders and well-wishers who have continued to identify with his vision and encourage his various initiatives. He described their confidence as both an honour and a responsibility, noting that the trust of the people imposes a greater obligation to remain consistent in service.
The international businessman further stressed the importance of inclusive development, saying that every community has individuals with remarkable talents and capabilities which can be harnessed when the right support structures are provided.
He said his experience in business, philanthropy and public affairs has strengthened his understanding of the importance of creating pathways through which people can participate meaningfully in economic and social development.
“I have always believed in the potential of our people. What many individuals need is not pity, but an opportunity, encouragement and the right platform to succeed. Our responsibility as leaders and stakeholders is to help create those platforms and ensure that people are not left behind,” Akym added.
He equally called for greater collaboration among political leaders, traditional institutions, community organisations, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders in addressing the developmental needs of grassroots communities.
According to him, no individual or organisation can single-handedly solve all the challenges confronting society, making collective action and responsible leadership essential to achieving sustainable progress.
“Development is a collective responsibility. Government has its role, private individuals have their role, and communities themselves also have an important role to play. When these efforts converge around a common purpose, we can achieve results that will endure beyond any particular administration or political season,” he said.
Hon. Onyekwere Akym Uche's approach to grassroots engagement reflects his broader philosophy of service, empowerment and human capital development. Through his philanthropic activities and the OAU Foundation, he has continued to identify with causes focused on improving lives and strengthening communities.
He further assured the people that his commitment would remain sustained, irrespective of changing circumstances, stressing that the desire to contribute positively to society must be driven by conviction rather than convenience.
“The journey continues, and I remain committed to doing my part. I will continue to listen, engage, support and seek opportunities to make a positive difference. The people deserve leadership that remembers them, values them and remains accessible to them,” OAU said.
The politician also urged his supporters to remain united and committed to the shared ideals of progress, empowerment and community advancement. He emphasised that the strength of any grassroots movement lies in its ability to build trust, encourage participation and maintain a clear focus on the welfare of the people.
As he continues to expand his engagement with communities and stakeholders, Hon. Onyekwere Akym Uche has reiterated that grassroots empowerment will remain a central component of his vision, with a sustained emphasis on creating opportunities, strengthening human capacity and contributing to the emergence of stronger and more prosperous communities.
