The Executive Mayor of Ikwuano Local Government Council, Dr Anthony Nwaubani, has called for sustained grassroots mobilisation and collective commitment towards preserving what he described as the transformation taking place in Abia State under the administration of Gov. Alex Chioma Otti.

Nwaubani made the call during the inauguration of the Umuahia Zone of the Echezona Street Vanguard, a support group founded by Dr. Christian Anokwuru to mobilise citizens at the grassroots and sustain awareness of the policies, programmes and achievements of the Otti administration. The inauguration, held in Umuahia on Saturday, attracted political stakeholders, community leaders, supporters and members of the Labour party and the vanguard.

The Umuahia inauguration came months after the establishment of the Aba Zone, marking another step in the expansion of the organisation's grassroots structure across Abia State. The group, through its activities, seeks to encourage supporters to remember the experiences that preceded the present administration and to remain actively involved in the political process as the 2027 general elections draw closer.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Nwaubani opened his remarks with a striking metaphor, declaring, “Before light, there was darkness.” He said the emergence of light had become a defining symbol of the renewed confidence and optimism he believes many Abians now associate with the state, attributing the development to the leadership of Dr Alex Otti.

According to the Mayor, the concept of light extends beyond physical illumination to encompass development, improved governance, renewed hope and a changing sense of direction among the people. He maintained that Abians should appreciate the changes they have witnessed while also remembering the circumstances that preceded the current administration.

“Today, we are seeing light to the glory of God, by the courtesy of one man, our people-oriented Governor, Dr. Alex Otti,” Nwaubani stated.

He urged the people not to allow the comfort and improvements they currently experience to make them forget the challenges of the past, stressing that the essence of the Echezona initiative is to preserve that memory and ensure that citizens remain conscious of the journey that brought the state to its present position.

The Mayor further declared that the mobilisation for continuity must extend beyond political offices and conventional campaign structures, insisting that supporters should take the message directly to the people.

“We are not going to sit in the executive office. We are going to be on the street, house to house,” he said, signalling his commitment to a grassroots approach in engaging residents and communicating the administration's record.

Nwaubani also announced a personal contribution of ₦200,000 towards the activities of the Echezona Street Vanguard, describing grassroots participation as essential to building a sustainable political structure. His remarks showed the importance he attached to active community engagement, particularly at a time when political activities are gradually intensifying ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Mayor's address resonated with the central philosophy of the Echezona Street Vanguard, with its founder, Dr. Christian Anokwuru, also urging members to establish functional structures across local government areas, wards and polling units. Anokwuru stressed that effective political organisation requires sustained presence at the grassroots rather than activity concentrated only at the leadership level.

He called on supporters to populate their teams across the various political structures and polling units, encouraging them to work collectively towards sustaining the support base of Gov Otti. He also urged members to conduct themselves in ways that would make Abia proud and further strengthen the confidence of the Governor and his supporters.

The inauguration therefore represents another phase in the expansion of the Echezona Street Vanguard's organisational network in Abia. With the movement now extending its structure from Aba to Umuahia, its leadership has signalled an intention to deepen its presence within communities and build stronger grassroots engagement across the state.

For Mayor Nwaubani, however, the central message remains the need for Abians to remember their past, recognise the changes they believe have occurred under the present administration and remain actively involved in shaping the political future of the state. His emphasis on street-to-street and house-to-house engagement reflects an approach designed to take political mobilisation beyond formal gatherings and directly into the communities.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections continue, the inauguration of the Umuahia Zone adds another layer to the growing network of political support groups operating across Abia. The Echezona Street Vanguard says its expanding structure will continue to engage residents, strengthen grassroots participation and keep its message of remembrance and political consciousness alive across the state.
