According to the provisional list of speakers for the high-level General Debate, Tinubu is expected to speak during the morning session on the second day of the debate, joining leaders from countries across the world.
The Nigerian President is listed as the 10th speaker for the session and is expected to deliver his address between 11:30 a.m. and noon New York time, corresponding to approximately 4:30 p.m. Nigerian time.
The General Debate, which will bring together representatives of all 193 United Nations member states, is scheduled to run from September 22 to 28 at the UN headquarters in New York.
More than 150 heads of state and government are expected to participate in the high-level gathering, alongside vice presidents, deputy prime ministers, ministers and other senior government officials.
The opening day of the debate on September 22 is expected to feature addresses by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who will traditionally open the session, followed by United States President Donald Trump as the host country's leader.
The 81st UN General Assembly will be presided over by Bangladesh’s Khalilur Rahman, while the theme for the session is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Tinubu’s planned appearance marks his return to the UN General Assembly after he was represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the previous two sessions. His attendance was earlier confirmed by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim.
The President’s participation is expected to provide Nigeria with an important diplomatic platform to present the country’s position on major global issues, highlight ongoing economic reforms and advance its interests in international cooperation.
Nigeria is also expected to use the gathering to strengthen bilateral and multilateral partnerships while engaging other world leaders on issues of mutual interest, including development, security and regional stability.
The UN General Assembly’s 81st session formally opens on September 8, while the high-level General Debate will commence on September 22.
Tinubu’s September 23 address is therefore expected to attract considerable international attention as Nigeria seeks to project its priorities and perspectives before the global community.
