FG Brings Home 83 More Nigerians Amid Xenophobic Tension in South Africa

The Federal Government has announced the arrival of another batch of 83 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa following renewed concerns over xenophobic attacks and growing anti-foreigner sentiments in the country.

The latest group of returnees was brought back under the government’s efforts to protect Nigerians affected by the deteriorating security and social situation surrounding foreigners in parts of South Africa.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that the latest evacuation was made possible through the intervention of public-spirited private individuals who sponsored the air tickets for the affected Nigerians.

The ministry expressed appreciation to the individuals and philanthropists involved, describing their contribution as a significant demonstration of patriotism and solidarity with Nigerians facing difficulties abroad.

The latest development follows the Federal Government’s voluntary repatriation programme, through which nearly 1,490 Nigerians have already been evacuated from South Africa amid reports of attacks, discrimination and hostility towards African migrants.

The Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, reiterated its commitment to protecting the dignity, safety and welfare of Nigerians wherever they reside.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called on corporate organisations, the organised private sector, state governments, philanthropists and other well-meaning Nigerians to support government efforts in responding to consular emergencies involving Nigerian citizens abroad.

According to the ministry, the intervention of private citizens in facilitating the latest evacuation reflects the “whole of society approach” being encouraged by the government in addressing challenges affecting Nigerians at home and abroad.

The government further assured Nigerians that it would sustain diplomatic engagement with the South African authorities in a bid to address the root causes of Afrophobia and prevent further attacks and discriminatory treatment of Nigerians and other African nationals.

The renewed evacuation comes against the backdrop of heightened international concern over anti-migrant violence in South Africa. Nigeria has been among the African countries seeking stronger regional and diplomatic action to address recurring xenophobic attacks and protect the rights of its citizens.

The Federal Government said it would continue to explore diplomatic channels and other appropriate measures to safeguard Nigerians while working towards a lasting solution to the challenges confronting African migrants in South Africa.
