Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has called for renewed commitment toward the protection, welfare, and development of children across Nigeria, stating that safeguarding the rights and future of every child must remain a shared responsibility among government, families, institutions, and society at large.
In a statement made available to newsmen to commemorate the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, Aguocha described children as the heartbeat of every nation and the most valuable investment for a better and more prosperous future. He noted that the occasion provides an opportunity for leaders and citizens alike to reflect on the urgent need to create a society where children can grow in safety, dignity, peace, and hope.
The federal lawmaker praised children across Abia State and Nigeria for their resilience, brilliance, creativity, and determination despite prevailing social and economic challenges. According to him, children possess enormous potential capable of transforming society positively if given proper education, guidance, and opportunities to thrive.
Aguocha stressed that the rights of children to quality education, healthcare, security, shelter, and moral upbringing must never be neglected, adding that any society that fails to invest meaningfully in its children risks undermining its own future. He maintained that beyond ceremonial celebrations, Children’s Day should inspire deliberate policies and actions aimed at improving the lives and wellbeing of young people.
The lawmaker also commended parents, guardians, and teachers for their sacrifices and unwavering commitment toward nurturing children into responsible citizens. He acknowledged the critical role families and educators continue to play in shaping the character, discipline, and aspirations of the younger generation, often under difficult circumstances.
Hon. Aguocha further applauded the administration of Gov. Alex Otti for ongoing efforts to reposition the education sector and improve infrastructure across Abia State. He noted that investments in school rehabilitation, educational reforms, and human capital development remain essential steps toward building a brighter future for Abia children and empowering them to compete successfully in a rapidly changing world.
He, however, expressed concern over increasing threats facing children in parts of the country, including insecurity, child abuse, trafficking, child labour, exploitation, and limited access to quality education. Aguocha urged relevant authorities, security agencies, and stakeholders to intensify efforts toward protecting children from all forms of violence and social injustice.
The lawmaker particularly called for urgent and coordinated action to secure the release of abducted school children in different parts of the country, emphasizing that no child should be forced to live in fear or be denied access to education because of insecurity. He stated that protecting schools and ensuring the safety of children must remain a national priority.
Obi Aguocha encouraged children to remain focused on their education, uphold good morals, and believe in their ability to achieve greatness through hard work, discipline, and perseverance. He assured young people that leadership and society must continue working toward creating opportunities that will help them realize their dreams and aspirations.
Reaffirming his dedication to youth empowerment and educational advancement within his constituency, Aguocha pledged continued support for initiatives and policies that promote child development and protect the rights of every Nigerian child.
“Children are not only the leaders of tomorrow; they are the pride and hope of today. We all have a duty to protect them, guide them, and create an environment where they can flourish and fulfill their God-given potential,” Aguocha stated.
