Abia Assembly Plenary: Hon. Emeka Obioma Raises Alarm Over Worsening Erosion in Umuahia South, House Orders Immediate Govt Action

The Abia State House of Assembly has called for urgent government intervention to address the worsening erosion menace ravaging communities across the State, particularly in Umuahia South State Constituency, following a matter of urgent public importance presented during plenary by the Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Emeka Tommy Jacob Obioma.

At Tuesday’s plenary session, the House formally adopted the Votes and Proceedings of its previous sitting held on 5th May, 2026, as its official working document before proceeding to legislative business for the day.

While contributing to deliberations, Hon. Emeka Obioma, who represents Umuahia South State Constituency, passionately drew the attention of the House to the alarming rate of environmental degradation and gully erosion threatening lives, homes, roads, and economic activities in several communities within his constituency.

The lawmaker lamented that the continuous expansion of erosion sites has exposed residents to severe hardship, displaced families, endangered public infrastructure, and posed grave environmental and humanitarian concerns requiring immediate government attention.

Hon. Obioma stressed that unless urgent and coordinated intervention measures are implemented, the situation could deteriorate further, leading to greater destruction of property and increased risks to affected communities. He therefore urged the House to prevail on the relevant authorities, especially the Ministry of Environment, to intensify erosion control and remediation efforts across vulnerable areas in the State.

Following extensive deliberations by members, the House unanimously resolved to mandate the Ministry of Environment to immediately swing into action and strengthen intervention measures at erosion-prone communities in Umuahia South and other affected parts of Abia State.

The lawmakers emphasized the need for proactive environmental management policies and timely intervention projects aimed at protecting lives, preserving infrastructure, and mitigating the devastating impact of erosion across the State.

The resolution of the House was widely viewed as a significant step towards addressing one of the major environmental challenges confronting several communities in Abia State, particularly during the rainy season when erosion activities often intensify.

The House thereafter adjourned plenary to reconvene on a later legislative date.
