A firm, Plogging Nigeria, has partnered with the Embassy of Sweden in Nigeria to launch the Nigerian Waste Management Directory codenamed NIWAD 1.0, a digital platform designed to improve access to recycling and waste management services across the country.
According to a statement on Friday, the platform was unveiled at a high-level event held at the Swedish Embassy Residence on March 30 to mark the International Day of Zero Waste.
The event attracted diplomats, government officials, private sector stakeholders and development partners focused on addressing Nigeria’s growing waste management challenges.
NIWAD 1.0 is a free, searchable online directory that connects citizens, businesses and institutions with verified recycling, upcycling and waste management service providers based on location and area of specialization.
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between waste generators and service providers while improving access to reliable information in the sector.
Speaking at the launch, Sweden’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Anna Westerholm, described the platform as a major step forward in strengthening transparency and supporting sustainable development efforts.
The Founder and Executive Director of Plogging Nigeria, Mayokun Iyaomolere, said the directory goes beyond a simple listing service, describing it as a foundational tool for data-driven decision-making in the waste management sector.
He said, “NIWAD is a foundational tool for policymakers, investors and researchers seeking structured data to support sustainable waste management and infrastructure development in Nigeria.”
According to the organisers, plans are underway to develop NIWAD 2.0, an upgraded version of the platform valued at 50,000 dollars.
The next phase will expand NIWAD into a nationwide data and technology system, featuring a mobile application, wider data coverage across all states and local government areas, inclusion of informal waste collectors, and advanced analytics such as recycling volume tracking.
NIWAD 1.0 is currently live and will be updated on a rolling basis, with stakeholders encouraged to contribute data and support its continued expansion.
