The member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency, Rt Hon Obi Aguocha, has thrown his weight behind the strategic agricultural investment drive of Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, describing the initiative as a forward-thinking policy that will stimulate economic expansion and reposition the state for sustainable growth.
Aguocha gave the endorsement while reacting to the proposed partnership between the Abia State Government and Presco PLC for the establishment of a large-scale oil palm plantation and processing facility. The project, valued at about 200 million dollars, is expected to cover approximately 14,000 hectares of land and serve as a major agro-industrial hub for the South East region.
According to the federal lawmaker, the initiative represents a decisive shift towards productive economic diversification, noting that agriculture remains one of the most viable pathways for job creation, industrial growth, and rural development in Nigeria. He added that the scale and structure of the proposed investment demonstrate a clear commitment to long-term value creation.
Speaking on the significance of the locations earmarked for the project, Aguocha identified Ulonna Farm Settlement in Umuahia North Local Government Area as a critical catalyst for economic expansion. He noted that the area’s agricultural history, coupled with its fertile land and strategic positioning, makes it well-suited to anchor such a transformative initiative.
“This is a well-conceived intervention that recognizes the immense potential of Ulonna as a historic agricultural hub. By situating a major component of this project there, the government is not only reviving a legacy asset but also unlocking new economic opportunities that will benefit the wider region,” Aguocha stated.
He further explained that other proposed locations, including Ozuitem in Bende Local Government Area and Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area, would ensure a balanced spread of development across the state, thereby promoting inclusivity and regional economic integration.
Aguocha emphasized that the investment should be seen as a modern continuation of the agricultural revolution pioneered by former Eastern Region Premier, Michael Okpara, whose farm settlement model significantly enhanced productivity and self-sufficiency in the region.
“What we are witnessing is a strategic effort to reconnect with a proven model of agricultural excellence. The vision of Dr Michael Okpara transformed the Eastern Region into a leading agricultural powerhouse, and this initiative has the potential to replicate and even surpass that success in today’s context,” he said.
Highlighting the socio-economic benefits of the project, Aguocha noted that it is expected to generate a good number of direct and indirect jobs, particularly for young people, while also stimulating economic activities in host communities through improved infrastructure and increased commercial engagements.
“In concrete terms, this project will create employment opportunities for our youths, reduce the pressure on urban centers, and foster development in rural communities. It will also encourage value addition through processing and attract ancillary industries that depend on palm oil derivatives,” he added.
The lawmaker also commended Gov Otti for his deliberate approach to attracting credible investors and creating an enabling environment for large-scale agricultural ventures. He expressed confidence that the successful execution of the project would position Abia State as a leading destination for agro-industrial investments in Nigeria.
Aguocha called on stakeholders, community leaders, and residents of the benefiting areas to support the initiative, stressing that collective ownership and cooperation are essential for its success. He reiterated his commitment to legislative backing and advocacy that would further enhance agricultural development and economic prosperity in the state.
