Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, member representing Umuahia North (Ohuhu) state Constituency in the Abia House of Assembly, has called on political actors to respect the will of the people and uphold democratic values.
Speaking in reaction to recent political developments and public exchanges among prominent figures in the state, Akaliro stressed that democracy can only thrive when electoral outcomes are accepted in good faith and leaders conduct themselves with responsibility and restraint.
He warned that attempts to undermine popular mandate through political pressure or elite consensus pose a threat to social cohesion and democratic stability.
“The will of the people must always come first,” Akaliro said. “Elections are not a personal contest of influence or power. They are a collective decision made by citizens, and that decision must be respected, even when it does not favour certain interests.”
The legal luminary noted that Abia has witnessed a growing level of political awareness among its citizens, which he said has reduced tolerance for godfatherism and imposition. According to him, the 2023 elections signalled a shift toward people-driven governance, a development that should be strengthened rather than contested through inflammatory rhetoric.
He cautioned political leaders against actions and statements capable of heightening tensions, noting that such conduct distracts from the urgent responsibility of governance and service delivery.
“Leadership demands maturity,” he said. “When political disagreements arise, they should be addressed through dialogue and lawful processes, not through actions that undermine public confidence.”
The lawmaker further called for issue-based politics anchored on development, accountability, and inclusiveness. He argued that Abia’s future depends on leaders who are prepared to engage constructively and place the welfare of the people above partisan or personal interests.
“Our focus should be on building institutions, improving lives, and creating opportunities for our people,” Akaliro stated.
“Political rivalry should never override our shared responsibility to promote peace, stability, and progress in Abia State.”
The Umuahia North Rep also urged citizens to remain vigilant and actively involved in the democratic process, stressing that sustained civic engagement is essential to safeguarding democracy. He commended the resilience of Abians and encouraged them to continue holding leaders accountable through peaceful and lawful means.
Reaffirming his commitment to responsive representation, Akaliro pledged to continue advocating policies and legislative actions that reflect the aspirations of his constituents. He said respecting the people’s will is not only a democratic obligation but a moral responsibility for anyone entrusted with public office.
