Political stakeholders in Abia State have continued to weigh in on the rising political tensions following recent public exchanges among prominent figures, with Hon. Emeka Obioma, Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, calling for restraint, maturity, and unwavering respect for democratic principles.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Obioma urged political actors across party lines to place the collective interest of the people above personal ambition and political rivalry. He warned that attempts to dominate the political space through influence, intimidation, or backroom maneuvering threaten the democratic gains recorded in recent years.
“Abia belongs to the people, not political interests,” Obioma said.
“No individual, group, or political structure has the right to appropriate the mandate freely given by the electorate. Democracy thrives only when the will of the people is respected and protected.”
The lawmaker noted that the political developments currently generating public debate should serve as a reminder that power in a democracy flows from the people. According to him, elections are not won through personal claims or historical narratives, but through the trust and confidence of voters who expect transparent and accountable leadership.
Obioma cautioned against political rhetoric that seeks to inflame tensions or undermine public confidence in democratic institutions. He said such narratives risk distracting leaders from the urgent task of governance and development.
“Political competition should not degenerate into ego battles or attempts to rewrite the people’s decision,” he stated.
Emphasising the need for responsible leadership, Obioma called on political leaders to engage in issue-based discourse and constructive opposition rather than personal attacks. He stressed that Abia’s progress depends on unity of purpose, respect for institutions, and adherence to democratic norms.
“Our people are more aware and more engaged than ever before,” Obioma said. “They expect leadership that listens, serves, and delivers, not politics driven by entitlement or desperation. Those who ignore this reality do so at their own peril.”
The Chief Whip also highlighted the importance of peace and stability as the state looks ahead to future elections. He urged politicians to conduct themselves in a manner that promotes harmony and strengthens public trust in the electoral process.
“The credibility of our democracy is measured by how leaders behave both in victory and in opposition,” he added.
Obioma reaffirmed his commitment to people-centred governance and inclusive representation, pledging to continue defending democratic values in the Abia State House of Assembly. He encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and actively engaged in the democratic process, noting that sustained participation is key to safeguarding Abia’s political future.
