Aguocha Refutes Alleged Diversion of Federal Rice Palliatives, Threatens Legal Action Over Viral Video

ABIA|October 21, 2026 —

The member representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has refuted allegations that he diverted and sold two truckloads of rice provided by the Federal Government for distribution to his constituents, describing the claims as false, malicious and politically motivated.

Aguocha, in a press statement issued on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, said the allegations were contained in a viral video featuring one Charles Ogbonna, which began circulating across social media platforms on October 20. He categorically denied any involvement in the alleged diversion or sale of federal food relief items, insisting that the palliatives allocated to his constituency were distributed through established community-based channels.

The federal lawmaker maintained that the distribution was conducted transparently and directly to beneficiaries across Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency. He described the allegations as a calculated attempt to tarnish his reputation and undermine public confidence in his representation.

According to Aguocha, his relationship with Ogbonna deteriorated after he cautioned him against making what he described as unfounded allegations and launching unwarranted public attacks against Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Chioma Otti. He further alleged that the campaign against him was being circulated through the social media channels of Ikechukwu Kelvin Okorie, popularly known as “Ikukufied,” and other individuals he accused of collaborating in the alleged smear campaign.

The lawmaker also linked the development to the political contest ahead of the 2027 general elections, alleging that his political opponents were seeking to discredit his record of service and weaken his standing among constituents. He recalled his victory in the 2023 general election, claiming that he defeated his opponents by a margin of more than 20,000 votes, and expressed confidence in his electoral prospects in 2027.

Aguocha further alleged that the circulation of the video was intended to divert public attention from ongoing proceedings involving former Abia State Governor, T.A. Orji, and his son, Chinedum Orji, at the Abia State High Court in Umuahia. He referenced criminal case numbers HU/69C/2024 and FHC/ABJ/CS/03/V/2025 in connection with his allegations against the individuals.

Expressing concern over what he described as the potential consequences of the allegations, Aguocha said falsely accusing a public official of stealing relief materials intended for economically vulnerable citizens could provoke public anger and hostility. He warned that such claims, particularly amid prevailing economic difficulties, could undermine public peace and expose individuals to the risk of mob action.

The lawmaker consequently announced plans to pursue legal action against Ogbonna, Okorie and others he alleged were involved in originating, publishing or sponsoring the claims. He cited the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, as amended in 2024, as well as relevant provisions relating to defamation and incitement, arguing that the alleged dissemination of false information could attract legal consequences.

He disclosed that his legal team was compiling digital evidence, recorded transmissions, financial records and publication trails in preparation for possible legal proceedings. Aguocha said he intended to pursue the matter through the appropriate law enforcement and judicial channels, adding that those found culpable should be held accountable under the law.

Addressing his constituents, the lawmaker urged residents of Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South to remain calm, exercise discernment and avoid being swayed by what he described as politically sponsored propaganda. He reassured them that the controversy would not distract him from his legislative responsibilities or his commitment to constituency development.

Aguocha reaffirmed his commitment to transparency, accountability and the responsible discharge of the mandate entrusted to him by the electorate. He maintained that no amount of negative publicity would deter him from pursuing his development agenda, expressing the hope of continuing in office until 2031.
