Ikwuano, Abia State| September 5, 2026 —
The Executive Mayor, Ikwuano Local Government Council, Hon. Dr. Anthony Nzeribe Nwaubani, has commended the Abia State Government for its comprehensive agricultural input distribution programme targeted at farmers across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
Nwaubani described the initiative as a significant intervention capable of strengthening agricultural productivity, improving farmers’ livelihoods and advancing the administration’s broader objective of achieving sustainable food security and economic growth in Abia State.
The agricultural input distribution exercise, which is being implemented across the state, is designed to take essential farm inputs directly to farmers at the grassroots, particularly smallholder and vulnerable farmers whose productive capacity is often constrained by the high cost of agricultural inputs.
Speaking on the development, the Ikwuano Mayor commended Gov. Alex Otti for demonstrating what he described as a practical understanding of the challenges confronting farmers and for taking deliberate steps to provide the support required to improve agricultural production.
According to Nwaubani, the initiative goes beyond the mere distribution of farm materials, as it represents an investment in the productive capacity of Abia's rural population and the state's food economy.
“This is a commendable initiative by the Abia State Government under the leadership of Gov Alex Otti. When you support farmers with the inputs they need, you are not only helping individuals, you are strengthening the entire food production chain and creating opportunities for families and communities,” Nwaubani said.
The range of inputs being distributed includes cassava, maize, tomato and pepper varieties, as well as NPK and organic fertilisers, providing farmers with materials capable of supporting different aspects of crop production across the various agricultural communities in the state.
Nwaubani noted that the diversity of the inputs was particularly important because farmers across Abia engage in different forms of crop cultivation, adding that access to quality inputs at the appropriate time could significantly improve yields and encourage more people to embrace agriculture as a viable economic enterprise.
“We are encouraged by the fact that farmers are being considered across the 17 Local Government Areas and the various wards. This shows that the intervention is intended to reach the grassroots. Agriculture is the livelihood of many of our people, and giving farmers the necessary support is an investment in their future and in the future of Abia,” he stated.
The Mayor further expressed optimism that the intervention would contribute to reducing the pressure created by rising input costs, which have continued to pose challenges to smallholder farmers and limit their ability to cultivate larger portions of land.
He said providing seeds, fertilisers and other farm inputs could help farmers increase their production capacity, improve household incomes and contribute to a more resilient agricultural sector.
Nwaubani also praised the peaceful and orderly conduct of the distribution exercise, stressing that the success of such programmes depends not only on government intervention but also on the cooperation of beneficiaries and stakeholders at the local level.
“I commend my people for their peaceful conduct and cooperation. Such programmes can only achieve their desired objectives when government officials, farmers and other stakeholders work together responsibly,” he said.
He called on beneficiaries to make judicious use of the inputs, urging farmers to see the support as an opportunity to expand production and contribute meaningfully to the state's food security agenda.
The Mayor also reaffirmed the commitment of the Ikwuano Local Government administration to initiatives that promote agriculture, empower rural communities and create sustainable economic opportunities for residents.
He maintained that with sustained government investment, improved access to agricultural inputs, modern farming practices and stronger value chains, Abia can unlock the enormous economic potential embedded in its agricultural sector.
“Our farmers deserve every support that can make their work more productive and profitable. We must continue to encourage them, because a stronger agricultural sector means more food, more jobs, stronger rural economies and a more prosperous Abia,” Nwaubani added.
The statewide distribution therefore marks another intervention aimed at positioning agriculture as a strategic component of Abia's economic transformation, while ensuring that the benefits of government policies and programmes extend to farmers at the grassroots.
