OAU Welcomes New Month, Calls for Active Civic Participation as 2027 Elections Draw Near

October 1, 2026 —

International business man, Politician and founder of the OAU foundation, Hon. Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU), has welcomed Nigerians, particularly Abians, into the new month of October, urging citizens to embrace active civic participation, responsible leadership and collective commitment to the development of the nation as the 2027 general elections draw closer.

Akym, in his New Month message, described October as a period that offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the country's journey, assess the progress made so far and renew their commitment to building a more prosperous, peaceful and democratic society.

He stressed that the approach of another electoral cycle should not merely be viewed as a season of political campaigns and contests for elective positions, but as an opportunity for citizens to become more deliberate about the quality of leadership they desire at all levels of government.

According to him, the strength of any democracy depends significantly on the willingness of citizens to participate meaningfully in the political process, from voter registration and civic education to the evaluation of candidates, peaceful engagement and the exercise of their constitutional right to vote.

OAU therefore encouraged citizens to take a keen interest in public affairs and scrutinise the antecedents, competence, character, programmes and policy priorities of individuals seeking public office. He maintained that voters should place the broader interests of their communities and the nation above sentiments, inducements and temporary political considerations.

He further called on political actors and aspiring candidates to conduct their activities within the bounds of civility and democratic principles, noting that political competition should be centred on ideas, programmes and verifiable records of service rather than personal attacks, misinformation or actions capable of deepening divisions among citizens.

The former governorship candidate also urged young Nigerians to take a more active role in the democratic process, stressing that the youth constitute a significant component of the electorate and should therefore not remain passive spectators in decisions that will shape their future.

He said meaningful civic participation extends beyond elections, explaining that citizens must continue to hold elected officials accountable, engage government institutions constructively and contribute ideas towards addressing the social and economic challenges confronting their communities.

Onyekwere Akym Uche also used the occasion to encourage Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to the country's democratic journey despite existing challenges. He emphasised the need for unity, peaceful coexistence, respect for the rule of law and a shared determination to build institutions that serve the interests of the people.

As the nation looks ahead to the 2027 general elections, he urged eligible citizens to ensure that their civic documentation is in order and to familiarise themselves with the electoral process so that they can participate effectively and responsibly when the time comes.

He expressed optimism that a more informed and actively engaged electorate would contribute significantly to strengthening democratic governance and promoting accountable leadership in Nigeria.

OAU concluded by wishing Nigerians a productive and fulfilling month of October, urging citizens to approach the new month with renewed determination, patriotism and a commitment to making positive contributions to their communities and the nation at large.
