Umuahia, Abia State| September 23, 2026 —
The Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, Hon. Emeka Tommy Jacob Obioma, has continued the installation of solar-powered streetlights across communities in the constituency, with several locations already benefiting from the intervention.
The initiative, which is being implemented under the “Light Up Umuahia South Project,” is aimed at improving visibility, strengthening community security and enhancing the quality of life of residents through sustainable public lighting infrastructure.
According to details released by Obioma's media team, solar-powered streetlights have so far been donated and installed at Laguru Autonomous Community, Ubakala; Umuofai Mgbarakuma Autonomous Community, Ubakala; and Umuosu Community, Ubakala Ward A. Agbama Housing Estate has also received 46 solar-powered streetlights, while another 40 units have been donated and installed at Agbama Community, Olokoro.
The intervention at Agbama Community is expected to be expanded, with an additional 20 solar-powered streetlights scheduled to follow, further extending illumination to more areas of the community.
The continued rollout of the project marks another phase in Obioma’s constituency development efforts, coming as the lawmaker maintains that effective representation should translate into tangible interventions that respond to the everyday needs of constituents. Obioma has previously been associated with constituency projects in education, water infrastructure and community development.
Beyond the provision of illumination, the streetlight project is expected to have broader implications for community life. Better-lit streets can improve visibility for pedestrians and motorists at night, complement community security arrangements and make movement within residential areas more convenient.
The intervention could also provide a more conducive environment for legitimate business activities, particularly for small-scale traders and service providers whose operations extend into the evening. By increasing the hours during which people can safely move around and conduct lawful activities, public lighting can contribute to a more vibrant community environment.
The use of solar technology gives the project an additional sustainability dimension. Solar-powered streetlights can operate independently of conventional grid electricity, making them suitable for community lighting while harnessing renewable energy.
Obioma said the initiative goes beyond simply putting lights on streets, describing it as part of his broader effort to improve security, enhance movement at night, support local businesses and create a renewed sense of safety across communities in Umuahia South.
The lawmaker also emphasised that his approach to representation is centred on tangible projects and measurable impact rather than promises alone. His latest intervention therefore places the Light Up Umuahia South Project within a broader framework of constituency-focused development.
The phased nature of the project is also significant, as the installation is being extended from one community to another rather than concentrated in a single location. This approach is expected to allow more communities across the constituency to benefit from public lighting infrastructure as subsequent phases are implemented.
For beneficiaries of the streetlight intervention, the significance lies largely in its practical effect on their daily lives. From improved nighttime visibility to potentially safer movement and greater opportunities for evening commercial activity, the project is designed to address needs that are directly experienced at the community level.
With Laguru, Umuofai Mgbarakuma, Umuosu, Agbama Housing Estate and Agbama Community already included in the rollout, attention is expected to shift to other parts of Umuahia South as the project progresses.
As the installation continues across the constituency, the Light Up Umuahia South Project is gradually taking shape as a community-wide intervention focused on sustainable lighting, improved visibility and enhanced public spaces.
For Obioma, the objective remains clear: to take the benefits of the project from one community to another, one installation at a time, while contributing to a brighter and more secure Umuahia South.
