Umuahia, Abia State| September 9, 2026 —
The Member representing Umuahia North/Ohuhu State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has inspected a gully erosion site at Ekeoba, following mounting concerns over the devastating impact of the erosion on the community and its road network.
Akaliro, who recently undertook the inspection, expressed concern over the alarming progression of the erosion, which has gradually encroached on the adjoining road and poses a serious threat to the safety and mobility of residents.
The erosion, which has continued to expand, is reportedly eating deeply into the road, raising fears that the route could eventually be severed if urgent intervention is not undertaken. Such a development could significantly disrupt vehicular and pedestrian movement while worsening the socioeconomic difficulties faced by residents and other road users.
During the inspection, the lawmaker carefully assessed the extent of the erosion and examined the areas most vulnerable to further degradation. He also interacted with residents and community members, listening to their concerns and receiving firsthand accounts of the challenges created by the erosion.
Speaking during the visit, Akaliro assured the people that he would pursue appropriate measures towards addressing the problem, stressing the need for timely intervention before the erosion causes more extensive damage.
“I came here because I believe effective representation must begin with listening to the people and seeing their challenges firsthand. What we have seen here is a serious situation that requires urgent attention because we cannot afford to wait until the road is completely cut off before taking action. I will do everything within my capacity to ensure that the appropriate intervention is pursued to control this erosion and protect this important road,” Akaliro said.
He further emphasised that the welfare and safety of his constituents remain central to his legislative responsibilities, noting that issues affecting communities must not be ignored simply because they occur outside the immediate precincts of government offices.
“Our people should know that their concerns matter. As their representative, I have a responsibility to speak up and seek solutions whenever I identify challenges that threaten their wellbeing, movement or livelihoods. I am encouraged by the cooperation of the community, and I assure them that this matter will not be abandoned. We will continue to engage the relevant stakeholders and pursue a practical and sustainable solution,” he added.
The inspection shows Hon. Akaliro’s approach to constituency representation, which places emphasis on grassroots engagement, direct interaction with residents and practical responses to emerging community challenges.
Rather than relying solely on reports from community members, the lawmaker’s physical presence at the erosion site enabled him to gain a clearer understanding of the magnitude of the problem and the urgency required in addressing it.
The visit also attracted significant community participation, particularly from youths who were on ground to receive and welcome the lawmaker. Their presence reflected the growing interest of residents in efforts aimed at protecting the community’s infrastructure and ensuring the continued accessibility of the road.
The women of the community also offered prayers for Akaliro, asking God to strengthen, protect and guide him as he continues to serve the people of Umuahia North/Ohuhu State Constituency.
The development comes as another demonstration of the importance of responsive grassroots leadership, where elected representatives remain accessible to the people, identify challenges directly and pursue interventions capable of improving the living conditions of their constituents.
For the residents of Ekeoba, the visit has renewed hope that concerted efforts will be made to halt the advancing erosion before it causes irreversible damage to the road and further threatens movement and economic activities within the community.
