The Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has described the recently concluded Labour Party primaries in Abia State as a shining example of internal democracy, transparency, and political maturity, while reaffirming his commitment to quality representation and sustainable development for his constituents.
Speaking during an interview monitored on Flo 94.9FM Umuahia, Aguocha commended the leadership and members of the Labour Party across the state for conducting what he described as a peaceful and credible exercise that complied fully with the Electoral Act and the party's internal guidelines. According to him, the primaries stood out because of the absence of violence, rancour, and division often associated with political contests. He noted that the exercise demonstrated discipline, unity, and a collective commitment to strengthening democratic institutions. The federal lawmaker further attributed the atmosphere of orderliness within the party to the leadership culture encouraged by Gov. Alex Otti, whose administration, he said, has promoted accountability, structure, and respect for due process in political engagements.
Reflecting on his emergence from the primary election with 77,482 votes, Obi Aguocha described the outcome as both humbling and inspiring. He said the votes represented not merely figures on paper but thousands of individuals, families, and communities who have continued to place their trust in his leadership. The lawmaker observed that the total exceeded the votes he recorded during the 2023 general election, a development he interpreted as evidence of growing confidence in his representation. According to him, the result serves as a mandate for continuity and a reminder that public service requires constant dedication, responsiveness, and accountability to the people.
Responding to criticisms that his unopposed emergence diminished the strength of his mandate, Hon. Aguocha maintained that democracy is fundamentally about participation and legitimacy rather than the mere existence of competition. He argued that the significant turnout recorded during the primary election demonstrated that party members and constituents were deliberate in affirming their support for continuity. He insisted that the overwhelming endorsement reflected strengthened public trust rather than a weakened mandate, noting that the support was voluntarily expressed by the people.
On the prospects of facing a former representative in the forthcoming general election, Aguocha welcomed the contest, describing democracy as a system that thrives on choice and healthy competition. He emphasized that elections provide an opportunity for citizens to assess records, evaluate performance, and determine who best represents their interests. While expressing respect for political opponents, he stressed that politics should focus on ideas, achievements, and vision rather than personal rivalries. He added that his legislative record, constituency engagement, and development initiatives would ultimately speak for themselves before the electorate.
Addressing questions regarding experience and political competition, the lawmaker stated that while experience remains important, measurable impact is what matters most to voters. He observed that today's electorate is more informed and increasingly demands accountability, accessibility, and tangible results from elected officials. Obi Aguocha expressed confidence in the relationship he has built with constituents and the work he has undertaken since assuming office, stressing that his confidence is rooted in service delivery rather than political arrogance.
Highlighting his performance in the National Assembly, Aguocha disclosed that he has sponsored 26 bills and moved 12 motions addressing critical sectors including education, healthcare, infrastructure, institutional reforms, and economic development. He explained that several of the bills are already at advanced legislative stages, while others are helping to shape national conversations on development priorities affecting the South-East region. He emphasized that the objective of lawmaking should not be measured solely by numbers but by the capacity of legislation to solve societal problems and create opportunities for citizens.
Among the strategic legislative proposals he highlighted was the bill seeking the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Ikwuano. According to him, the proposed institution would significantly improve healthcare delivery, reduce pressure on existing medical facilities, bring specialized healthcare services closer to the people, and generate employment opportunities for health professionals and youths. He described the initiative as a people-centered intervention aimed at addressing one of the most pressing needs of society.
The legislator also underscored the importance of his bill seeking the upgrade of the Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike into a conventional university. He explained that the transformation would enable the institution to expand its academic offerings to include disciplines such as Medicine and Law, thereby broadening educational opportunities and positioning the university as a comprehensive centre of excellence. In addition, he highlighted the proposed establishment of a Federal Institute of Mining and Geosciences in Umuahia, which he said would strategically position the constituency within Nigeria's growing solid minerals sector and create new avenues for economic development.
Aguocha further defended his proposal for the creation of Ikwuano North and Ikwuano South Local Government Areas, arguing that the existing Ikwuano Local Government Area is one of the largest in Abia State both in population and geographical size. According to him, the proposed restructuring would improve grassroots governance, enhance political representation, ensure fairer resource allocation, and bring government services closer to the people. He noted that the proposal is aimed at restoring administrative balance and improving governance efficiency.
Beyond legislative activities, the lawmaker highlighted several constituency-focused interventions undertaken during his tenure. These include empowerment programmes, educational support initiatives, employment facilitation, youth development projects, and scholarship schemes. He emphasized that effective representation extends beyond lawmaking and requires constant engagement with constituents. Aguocha noted that maintaining accessibility remains a core aspect of his leadership philosophy, adding that his office continues to remain open to the concerns and aspirations of the people.
On the issue of the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, Aguocha reiterated his longstanding position that justice, fairness, dialogue, and constitutional engagement should guide efforts toward resolving the matter. He stated that he has consistently advocated for approaches capable of promoting peace, healing, reconciliation, and national cohesion, particularly in the South-East. The lawmaker disclosed that his interventions have included legislative advocacy, public engagement, and consultations with relevant stakeholders, maintaining that constructive dialogue remains the most sustainable path toward lasting resolution.
Turning his attention to the administration of Dr Alex Otti, Obi Aguocha praised the Abia State Governor for what he described as a transformative and results-driven style of governance. He said the state has witnessed notable improvements in infrastructure, accountability, and public confidence under Otti's leadership. According to him, the governor's calm but firm approach, anchored on planning, discipline, and execution, has ushered in a new era of governance in Abia State. He further noted that the governor's reforms have created an enabling environment that supports collaboration between federal and state institutions and facilitates the attraction of development projects to communities across the state.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Aguocha expressed profound gratitude to constituents for their continued support and confidence in his leadership. He pledged that, if given another opportunity to serve, he would intensify efforts to deepen representation, expand development initiatives, strengthen legislative advocacy, and ensure that Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency continues to maintain a strong and influential voice at the national level. He concluded by assuring constituents that through collective effort and shared commitment, the constituency would continue on the path of progress, dignity, and prosperity.
