Umuahia, Abia State|June 12, 2026 —
The member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Obi Aguocha, has called on Ndi Igbo to rise in unity, remain vigilant, and take proactive steps toward safeguarding their communities in the face of worsening insecurity across the South-East region.
Hon. Aguocha made the call following the recent abduction of a woman and her tricycle rider in the Alaocha area of Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State. The lawmaker expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of kidnapping and violent attacks in communities, stressing that the safety of lives and property must become a collective responsibility where government protection appears inadequate.
According to reports, the victims were abducted by suspected kidnappers while returning from their farm in the Alaocha axis. However, through the swift intervention of local vigilante groups, courageous youths of the affected community, and coordinated support from neighboring villages, the victims were successfully rescued on the same night of their abduction. Aguocha commended the bravery, unity, and determination displayed by the community members, describing their actions as a shining example of what can be achieved when communities work together against criminal elements.
The federal lawmaker maintained that the successful rescue operation demonstrated the importance of grassroots security arrangements and community cooperation. He warned that criminal groups, including suspected armed herdsmen and kidnappers, continue to exploit gaps in security across several parts of the country, urging Ndi Igbo not to remain passive in the face of growing threats. He emphasized that communities must organize themselves lawfully, support local vigilance structures, and strengthen intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks.
Aguocha noted that developments in other parts of Nigeria should serve as a warning to the South-East, insisting that waiting solely for government intervention may expose communities to greater danger. He argued that while security agencies must continue to perform their constitutional duties, local communities should equally embrace collective vigilance and lawful self-preservation measures to protect their families, farmlands, and ancestral homes from criminal incursions.
In a related development, the lawmaker strongly criticized the Federal Government's decision to amend its position in the ongoing legal proceedings involving Nnamdi Kanu. Aguocha condemned reports that the government is now seeking a death sentence through a cross-appeal, rather than the life imprisonment option previously pursued. He described the move as troubling and counterproductive at a period when many Nigerians are calling for reconciliation, dialogue, and national healing.
According to him, the pursuit of capital punishment in the matter sends the wrong signal and risks deepening existing divisions rather than fostering peace. He argued that sustainable national unity can only be achieved through justice, fairness, and constructive engagement, not through actions that may be perceived as punitive or vindictive. Aguocha further stated that the quest for peace in the South-East requires sincerity and a commitment to addressing longstanding grievances through democratic means.
The lawmaker therefore urged traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders across Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South to continue supporting efforts aimed at securing justice and promoting peaceful coexistence. He maintained that leaders must stand firm in defending the rights of their people while also encouraging lawful conduct and respect for the rule of law.
Reaffirming his commitment to the welfare and security of his constituents, Aguocha called on all levels of government to intensify efforts toward tackling kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes threatening communities across the nation. He stressed that Nigerians deserve to live without fear and that decisive action must be taken to restore public confidence in the country's security architecture.
He concluded by urging Ndi Igbo to remain united, vigilant, and committed to protecting their communities through lawful means, emphasizing that collective resolve, community cooperation, and responsible leadership remain essential ingredients for overcoming the security challenges confronting the region.
