June 12: Obioma Commends Nigerians' Democratic Resilience, Preaches Democratic Sustenance in Abia

Hon. Emeka Tommy Obioma, Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, has commended Nigerians for their resilience and unwavering commitment to democratic governance, urging citizens and leaders alike to work collectively towards sustaining and strengthening democracy in Abia State and across the country.

In a statement issued to mark the nation's Democracy Day, Obioma described the occasion as a historic reminder of the sacrifices made by countless Nigerians who fought for the restoration and preservation of democratic rule. He noted that the journey of democracy in Nigeria has been marked by challenges, setbacks, and triumphs, but praised citizens for their steadfast belief in democratic principles despite economic, social, and political difficulties.

According to the lawmaker, the endurance and resilience demonstrated by Nigerians over the years have played a vital role in sustaining democratic governance and preserving the nation's unity. He stated that Democracy Day serves not only as a celebration of political freedom but also as an opportunity to reflect on the responsibilities that accompany democratic participation.

Obioma emphasized that democracy remains the most effective system for promoting accountability, protecting citizens' rights, and ensuring inclusive development. He stressed that the continued growth of democracy depends on the active participation of the people, respect for the rule of law, and the commitment of leaders to place public interest above personal and partisan considerations.

The Umuahia South rep particularly called for the sustenance and deepening of democratic values in Abia State. He noted that the state has continued to witness significant progress under a democratic framework and urged political stakeholders, community leaders, civil society organizations, and citizens to remain united in safeguarding democratic institutions. According to him, sustaining democracy requires constant vigilance, constructive engagement, and a shared commitment to good governance.

The Chief Whip further stated that democratic governance must continue to deliver meaningful dividends to the people through improved infrastructure, quality healthcare, enhanced educational opportunities, youth empowerment, and economic development. He maintained that citizens' confidence in democracy grows when governments remain responsive to their needs and aspirations.

While paying tribute to the heroes and heroines of Nigeria's democratic struggle, Obioma acknowledged their sacrifices in securing the freedoms enjoyed by Nigerians today. He said their courage and patriotism should inspire present and future generations to defend democratic ideals and contribute positively to nation-building.

"As we commemorate June 12, we must celebrate not only our democratic achievements but also the resilience of the Nigerian people who have remained committed to democracy through difficult times," Obioma stated.

"Democracy can only endure when citizens actively participate in governance, when leaders remain accountable, and when institutions are strengthened to serve the people effectively."

He further urged the people of Abia State to continue supporting initiatives that promote peace, unity, and development, noting that a thriving democracy requires cooperation between government and the governed. He expressed confidence that with collective effort and responsible leadership, Abia State would continue to emerge as a model of democratic progress and good governance.

Obioma concluded by encouraging Abians and Nigerians at large to remain hopeful and steadfast in their belief in democratic values, emphasizing that the future of the nation depends on the collective commitment of citizens and leaders to justice, transparency, accountability, and sustainable development.
