The member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has commended the courage, vigilance, and unity demonstrated by the people of Ohuhu, particularly the youths of Umuawa-Alaocha, following the successful rescue of two farmers who were abducted by suspected kidnappers in Umuahia North Local Government Area.
The victims, Mrs. Onyinyechi Ekechukwu, a middle-aged woman, and Mr. Izuchukwu Okechi, a young man of about 20 years, both natives of Umuezerola-Umuawa-Alaocha, were reportedly abducted on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m. while returning from their farm at Nkpu-Ala, near the proposed site of the newly flagged-off Federal Housing Estate along the Umuahia-Uzuakoli Road.
According to information made available to the community, the kidnappers contacted the family shortly after the abduction through Mrs. Ekechukwu's phone and demanded a ransom of ₦12 million for the release of the victims. The development immediately triggered anxiety across Umuawa-Alaocha and neighbouring communities as residents feared for the safety of the captives.
Rather than surrender to fear, the youths of Ohuhu, especially those from Umuawa-Alaocha, swiftly mobilized under the leadership of the President-General, Hon. Chimex Nelcinn Uluocha. Armed with courage, local knowledge of the terrain, hunter's dogs, machetes, and clubs, the volunteers embarked on an extensive search operation through the surrounding bushes and forests. Witnesses said the youths tirelessly combed the area while calling out the names of the victims in a determined effort to locate them.
Their persistence and coordinated action reportedly put pressure on the kidnappers, who, upon noticing the growing presence of the search party, abandoned the victims and fled into the forest. The two captives were subsequently rescued alive from a nearby bush not far from the location where they had been abducted, bringing relief and jubilation to their families and the entire Ohuhu community.
Reacting to the successful rescue, Akaliro praised the remarkable bravery displayed by the youths and residents who participated in the operation. He described the development as a shining example of the power of community solidarity and collective action in confronting criminality.
"The successful rescue of these innocent citizens demonstrates what can be achieved when communities unite against insecurity. I commend the youths of Umuawa-Alaocha and the wider Ohuhu community for their courage, vigilance, and selfless commitment to protecting human lives. Their actions sent a strong message that our people will not surrender their communities to criminals," Akaliro stated.
The lawmaker also acknowledged the emotional trauma suffered by the victims and their families during the period of captivity, expressing gratitude to God for their safe recovery. He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting lawful efforts aimed at securing communities across Umuahia North and Abia State.
Akaliro further emphasized that security must not be left solely in the hands of security agencies, stressing that citizens have a vital role to play in safeguarding their environment.
"Security is our collective responsibility. Government and security agencies cannot succeed alone without the cooperation of the people. Residents must remain alert, report suspicious activities promptly, and work closely with community leaders and law enforcement authorities. Together, we can build safer communities for our people," he said.
Special commendation was also extended to Akaliro himself for his prompt response when news of the abduction reached him. Community leaders disclosed that the lawmaker immediately joined the rescue efforts and remained actively involved alongside residents until the victims were safely recovered.
The lawmaker also expressed appreciation to neighbouring communities, including Umuosu-Nkwoegwu, Umuawa-Alaike, Ndi-Akpahia, and Umuda-Isingwu, for their solidarity and support throughout the operation. He equally praised members of the National Forest Guard whose contributions aided the successful rescue mission.
According to Akaliro, the incident serves as a powerful reminder that insecurity can be confronted effectively when communities stand together with courage, unity, vigilance, and a shared determination to protect one another. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen local security structures, enhance intelligence gathering, and promote peaceful coexistence across Umuahia North State Constituency.
As calm gradually returns to the affected communities, residents have continued to celebrate what many describe as a collective victory for the entire Ohuhu nation. The successful rescue has not only reunited two families with their loved ones but has also reinforced confidence in the strength of community-driven responses to security challenges. For many observers, the operation stands as a testament to the resilience of the Ohuhu people and their unwavering determination to defend their communities against criminal elements.
