Renowned Nigerian music executive and founder of Mavin Records, Don Jazzy, has dismissed claims that the record label gives preferential treatment to certain artistes while sidelining others.
The award-winning producer, whose real name is Michael Collins Ajereh, addressed the allegations during a recent appearance on the Crea8torium podcast, where he explained that it would be unreasonable for a record label to invest heavily in artistes only to deliberately neglect them.
According to Don Jazzy, the perception that some artistes receive more support than others is often influenced by individual career choices, especially regarding the frequency of music releases and personal creative decisions.
“We do see lots of comments that we do not prioritise some artists, but that isn’t true,” he said, stressing that every artiste signed to the label remains important to the company’s growth and success.
He further noted that artistes who appear less active musically are usually responsible for such decisions themselves and are not being ignored by management. The music executive added that many artistes sometimes struggle with self-doubt and anxiety, which may contribute to assumptions of neglect within the industry.
Founded in 2012 by Don Jazzy following the dissolution of Mo’ Hits Records, Mavin Records has grown into one of Africa’s leading music labels, producing several successful artistes including Rema, Ayra Starr, Johnny Drille, Magixx, Bayanni, Boy Spyce and Ladipoe.
Don Jazzy maintained that there is no internal policy within the label that places one artiste above another, reiterating that the company remains committed to supporting the growth and development of every talent under its management.
