Speaking during the visit, Idris said he was at the palace to formally inform the emir of the decision of APC members in Kebbi State to endorse him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the forthcoming elections.
“We are here to formally notify the Emir and the traditional institution of the unanimous endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and myself by APC members in Kebbi State ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the governor said.
Idris explained that the visit was not a political campaign but a traditional consultation aimed at seeking prayers and guidance from royal fathers.
“This is not an electioneering campaign because traditional rulers are apolitical, and campaigns have not yet been authorised by INEC. We are only here to seek prayers, guidance, and blessings,” he stated.
The governor, who holds the traditional title of Kauran Gwandu, said the practice of politicians visiting traditional rulers for prayers and consultation had long existed in the state.
“I was part of similar visits in 1999, 2007, 2011, and 2014. Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari, and recently President Bola Tinubu all visited royal fathers for prayers and blessings,” he added.
Governor Idris, who also stressed the cordial relationship between his administration, the Tinubu-led federal government, and traditional institutions, further clarified,
“President Tinubu and I have maintained strong relationships with traditional institutions because of their commitment and selfless service to the people,” he said.
Responding, the Emir of Gwandu thanked the governor and his entourage for the visit and offered prayers for peace, guidance, and success.
The monarch, however, urged politicians to recognise the growing political awareness among citizens.
“There is increasing awareness among the electorate about their democratic rights and their ability to choose leaders based on competence, performance and track records of selfless service,” the emir said.
From Birnin Kebbi, Governor Idris proceeded to Argungu, where he also visited the Emir of Argungu, Samaila Mera.
The emir commended the governor for what he described as remarkable achievements recorded by the administration and prayed for continued peace and progress in the state.
He also called for peaceful and hitch-free political activities as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
Governor Idris is expected to continue similar visits to the Yauri and Zuru Emirates in the coming days as part of consultations with traditional institutions across Kebbi State.
