Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has called for a renewed commitment to people-centred governance, stressing that leadership must always take precedence over partisan interests.
Akaliro made this known while speaking to National Sunrise correspondent on the essence of responsible leadership in a democratic society, noting that governance loses its meaning when political calculations override the welfare of the people.
The lawmaker emphasised that true leadership is defined by service, accountability, and the courage to make decisions that advance the common good. According to him, political power should be viewed as a trust bestowed by the people, not a tool for personal or party advantage. He argued that when leaders prioritise politics over leadership, public confidence erodes and development suffers.
“Leadership must always come before politics,” Akaliro said. “When we place party loyalty above the needs of the people, we betray the very essence of public service. Governance should be about improving lives, not scoring political points.”
Akaliro noted that people-centred governance requires leaders to remain connected to the grassroots and responsive to the everyday challenges faced by their constituents. He explained that effective representation goes beyond legislative presence, demanding consistent engagement, thoughtful advocacy, and practical solutions that address local realities.
The Umuahia North lawmaker further stressed the importance of integrity and transparency in public office, describing them as essential pillars of sustainable governance. He maintained that leaders who govern with sincerity and openness are better positioned to earn public trust and drive meaningful progress.
“Integrity is not optional in leadership,” Akaliro said. “The people deserve leaders who are honest with them, who are accountable for their actions, and who are willing to defend their interests at all levels.”
Akaliro also called on political stakeholders to embrace unity and cooperation in the pursuit of development, noting that progress is best achieved when leaders work together across party lines for the collective benefit of the people.
“Development knows no party,” he added. “When leaders put the people first, collaboration becomes easier and governance becomes more effective.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to people-oriented legislation and constituency engagement, assuring residents of Umuahia North that he remains focused on policies and initiatives that promote inclusive growth and social well-being. According to him, leadership anchored on service and empathy is critical to building a responsive and resilient society.
