ABIA |January 17, 2026 —
Hon. Emeka Tommy Jacob Obioma, the Abia State House of Assembly Chief Whip and Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, has reiterated his commitment to people-centered governance, emphasizing that “Grassroots development is the true measure of legislative success.”
In an interactive session with National Sunrise, Obioma highlighted the tangible projects and interventions that have transformed the lives of his constituents.
Over the past several years, Hon. Obioma has consistently focused on delivering visible results across education, healthcare, infrastructure, and community development.
On education, he noted the expansion of support for students seeking higher education opportunities.
“Investing in our students today secures the future of Umuahia South,” he said, recalling how he sponsored over 70 students for the UTME in 2024, a number that surged to 255 beneficiaries in 2025. He further emphasized his role in improving school facilities, including the construction of new classrooms in Olokoro and the renovation of existing learning environments.
Healthcare, according to Obioma, remains a cornerstone of his legislative agenda. As Chairman of the House Committee on Health Care, he sponsored the landmark Nursing Education Bill, which has now been passed into law.
“Passing the Nursing Education Bill is only the beginning of transforming healthcare in our state,” he said, noting that the law will produce more skilled healthcare professionals and enhance the quality of medical services across Abia.
Additionally, Obioma facilitated the establishment of a major healthcare centre at Ehume, Umuokpara, providing residents with access to essential services, including antenatal care, immunization, and treatment for common ailments.
Hon Obioma’s commitment to community welfare extends to infrastructural development. He has overseen critical road projects such as the Umuopara Ring Road and the Abia Tower–Onuimo Road, projects he says “connect communities, stimulate local economies, and make life easier for residents.”
Beyond roads, he has facilitated the completion of borehole water projects and upgraded town halls in several communities, ensuring that residents have access to basic amenities and functional communal spaces.
“Every borehole, every tiled town hall brings real change to our constituents,” Obioma affirmed.
Reflecting on his overall philosophy of governance, Hon. Emeka Obioma stressed that legislative success is not measured by titles or political influence but by the tangible impact on people’s lives.
“Grassroots development is the true measure of legislative success,” he reiterated.
“A lawmaker’s duty is to serve the people, address their needs, and ensure that the benefits of governance reach every community.”
Constituents have lauded Obioma’s approach, describing him as a calm, strategic, and results-driven lawmaker. Many credit him with redefining legislative representation in Umuahia South, noting that the constituency has never experienced such sustained and visible development.
As Obioma continues to implement policies and projects that address the real needs of the people, his leadership serves as a model for effective, people-centered governance in Abia State.
