Reality television star Natacha Akide, popularly known as Tacha, has called on the organisers of Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) to temporarily suspend the show and develop fresh ideas capable of sustaining viewers' interest in an increasingly competitive entertainment industry.
Tacha made the appeal during an appearance on Arise 360, a programme on Arise News, where she observed that the growing influence of social media has significantly changed how Nigerians consume entertainment and engage with trending topics.
According to her, the reality television programme enjoyed considerable popularity when social media did not command the level of attention it attracts today. She argued that the current entertainment landscape requires the organisers to rethink their approach and introduce concepts that can compete effectively for public attention.
The former BBNaija housemate pointed to the ability of social media conversations to capture widespread public interest, citing the ongoing discussions surrounding the family dispute involving music duo P-Square as an example of the kind of online content that competes with reality television for attention.
She suggested that taking a break could give the programme an opportunity to reassess its format, develop more engaging content and allow audiences to develop a renewed appetite for its return.
Tacha also challenged the organisers to come up with more innovative and captivating ideas, stressing that Nigerian audiences have become increasingly demanding and are constantly exposed to diverse forms of entertainment across digital platforms.
The reality television star rose to prominence during the 2019 edition of BBNaija, tagged Pepper Dem, but was disqualified following a physical altercation with fellow housemate Mercy Eke.
Since leaving the show, Tacha has expanded her presence in the entertainment and fashion industries. She has also worked as a radio host on Cool FM 96.9 and launched Tacha FC in 2024, further diversifying her professional interests.
Her comments have renewed discussions about the future of BBNaija and the need for reality television producers to adapt to changing audience preferences, particularly as social media platforms continue to shape entertainment trends and public conversations.
