2023 Governorship Candidate, Onyekwere Akym Uche, Mobilises Political Structure for Otti’s 2027 Re-election

ABIA| October 9, 2026 —

2023 Abia governorship candidate, business man and founder of OAU foundation, Hon Onyekwere Akym Uche (OA, has reportedly begun mobilising his political structure in support of the re-election bid of Governor Alex Chioma Otti in 2027, in what could signal a significant realignment of political forces ahead of the next governorship election.

The development shows growing political consultations and strategic alliances among stakeholders who believe that continuity in governance is essential to sustaining Abia State’s development agenda.

Akym’s decision to deploy his political network in support of Gov. Otti reflects a willingness to consolidate political interests around the incumbent administration and its programmes. Such a move could strengthen the governor’s political base as preparations for the 2027 election gradually gather momentum. It also highlights the importance of coalition-building, grassroots mobilisation and stakeholder engagement in shaping the state’s evolving political landscape.

Governor Otti, who assumed office in May 2023, has consistently highlighted infrastructure renewal, public-sector reforms, education, healthcare and economic development as key priorities of his administration. His government’s activities across various sectors have continued to feature prominently in political discussions in Abia, with supporters advocating continuity to consolidate ongoing projects and reforms. Akym’s support for a second term is therefore likely to attract attention among political observers monitoring the emerging alignments ahead of 2027.

Speaking to newsmen in Umuahia, Akym said his position was informed by the need to place the collective interest of Abia State at the forefront and to sustain initiatives capable of delivering measurable benefits to the people. He noted that political leadership should be assessed by its impact on the lives of citizens, stressing that the state’s development requires cooperation, purposeful leadership and a shared commitment to progress.

“Abia needs a political environment where genuine development takes precedence over personal ambitions and narrow interests. Where there is evidence of purposeful leadership and a clear commitment to improving the welfare of the people, stakeholders must be willing to engage constructively and support efforts that advance the collective good. Our major responsibility is to the people of Abia State and to the future we are determined to build for the next generation,” OAU stated.

He further emphasised that effective political mobilisation must extend beyond electoral calculations to include sustained engagement with communities, the empowerment of young people, economic opportunities and inclusive governance. According to him, the 2027 political process should provide an opportunity for stakeholders to assess achievements, identify areas requiring improvement and articulate a common vision for the state. His decision to mobilise his political structure for Otti’s re-election is expected to contribute to ongoing consultations among political actors as the state approaches another electoral cycle.
