2027: Abia PDP Guber Candidate Unveils N90,000 Wage Plan, Promises Return of 15,000 Workers

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in Abia State, Dr. Kelechi Anosike, has unveiled a series of proposed workers’ welfare measures, including a N90,000 minimum wage for the lowest-paid state employee and the recall of about 15,000 workers whom he alleges were prematurely disengaged.

Anosike made the commitments as he outlined his policy agenda ahead of the 2027 governorship election, stressing that his proposed administration would place citizens’ welfare at the centre of governance. His campaign has been anchored on what he describes as a welfarist philosophy under the slogan, “People First, Abia Always.”

Speaking during a radio simulcast involving 12 stations across the state, the PDP candidate said his proposed administration would raise the minimum salary for the least-paid state worker to N90,000, above the N70,000 national minimum wage benchmark. He also alleged that some workers in the state were still receiving salaries below the benchmark.

Anosike further promised to establish an Abia State Salary Review and Restructuring Committee within his first 100 days in office to address what he described as disparities in the civil service. He said his proposed “Civil Service Care” programme would prioritise prompt payment of salaries and allowances as well as health insurance for workers.

On pensioners and retired workers, the PDP candidate pledged to clear outstanding gratuities, pension arrears and allowances within his first 100 days if elected. He also proposed a “Pension Plus” initiative aimed at reviewing pension payments in line with any new minimum wage structure introduced by his administration.

Anosike also reiterated his promise to recall approximately 15,000 workers whom he alleged were dismissed or prematurely retired. He had previously made the pledge at a Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, programme in Umuahia, arguing that workers should not be disengaged before reaching the stipulated retirement age or years of service.

Beyond workers’ welfare, the PDP candidate has proposed changes to the state’s taxation system. He said his administration would abolish daily levies imposed on low-income workers such as wheelbarrow and truck pushers and undertake a comprehensive review of the tax system. He argued that revenue generation should increasingly be driven by investment and economic expansion rather than placing additional pressure on people with limited incomes.

To expand employment opportunities for young people, Anosike announced plans to establish the Abia Labour and Global Opportunities Agency, ALGOA, which he said would equip youths with remote-work skills and connect them to opportunities in the global economy. He also proposed a football academy and the construction of stadia in Aba and Umuahia within his first year in office.

Anosike has also presented proposals covering agriculture, healthcare, education, infrastructure, youth empowerment and economic development as part of his broader 10-point manifesto. He said his administration would seek to combine infrastructure development with investments in human welfare, while attracting investors to expand Abia’s economic base and internally generated revenue.

The promises form part of the PDP candidate’s campaign platform for the 2027 Abia governorship election. The proposed policies, including the N90,000 minimum wage and recall of the affected workers, remain campaign commitments that would depend on the outcome of the election and subsequent implementation by any administration led by Anosike.
