The Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, Hon. Emeka Tommy Obioma, has felicitated with the youths of Umuahia South in comemoration of the 2026 International Youth Day, reaffirming his commitment to initiatives that promote education, skills development, human capital advancement and sustainable opportunities for young people.
Obioma, in a statement issued to newsmen, described the youth as a vital component of the social and economic transformation of every progressive society, stressing that the future of Umuahia South, Abia State and Nigeria is inseparably connected to the quality of investment made in young people today.
International Youth Day, observed annually on August 12, provides an opportunity to recognise the contributions, aspirations and challenges of young people around the world.
Obioma said the occasion should go beyond ceremonial celebrations and serve as a renewed call for deliberate policies and programmes capable of unlocking the enormous potential of Nigerian youths. He maintained that young people require an enabling environment where education, talent, innovation, entrepreneurship and hard work can translate into meaningful livelihoods and productive citizenship.
“I warmly celebrate the resilient, creative and enterprising youths of Umuahia South on this International Youth Day. Our young people are not merely leaders of tomorrow; they are important contributors to the development we are witnessing today. Their energy, ideas and talents must be nurtured and channelled towards building stronger communities and a more prosperous society,” Obioma said.
The lawmaker emphasised that education remains one of the most consequential investments any government or society can make in its younger generation. According to him, access to quality education equips young people with the intellectual capacity, confidence and competence required to compete favourably in an increasingly knowledge-driven global economy.
He noted that education should, however, be complemented by vocational training, digital literacy, entrepreneurship, mentorship and other forms of skills acquisition capable of preparing young people for the realities of the contemporary labour market.
“For me, education is at the heart of sustainable empowerment. When we educate a young person, we are giving that individual the capacity to solve problems, create opportunities and become useful to society. That is why I remain committed to supporting educational advancement and human capital development among our people,” he stated.
Obioma further stressed the need for society to move away from an approach to youth empowerment that focuses predominantly on short-term interventions. He advocated programmes that provide young people with enduring skills and opportunities capable of enabling them to become economically independent and contribute meaningfully to their families and communities.
He said investments in human capital should be regarded as a long-term development strategy rather than an act of charity, noting that empowered young people can become entrepreneurs, professionals, innovators, employers of labour and responsible leaders.
“True empowerment must produce independence. We should not only give our youths temporary assistance; we must equip them with the knowledge and skills to build sustainable livelihoods. When a young person becomes self-reliant, the impact extends beyond that individual to the family, community and the wider economy,” Obioma added.
The Chief Whip also encouraged youths in Umuahia South to embrace discipline, continuous learning, innovation and responsible citizenship. He urged them to take advantage of legitimate opportunities available to them while remaining committed to personal development and the pursuit of excellence.
He particularly encouraged young people to take greater interest in technology and emerging fields, noting that the digital economy has created new avenues through which young Nigerians can acquire knowledge, develop enterprises and participate in the global marketplace from their communities.
The United Nations, in its 2026 International Youth Day message, similarly stressed the importance of equipping young people with skills including critical thinking, problem-solving and digital literacy, while calling for greater youth participation in decision-making at local, national and international levels.
Obioma maintained that government, educational institutions, parents, community leaders, private organisations and other stakeholders all have important roles to play in creating a supportive ecosystem for youth development. He called for greater collaboration in identifying and addressing the educational, economic and social challenges confronting young people.
“The responsibility for youth development belongs to all of us. Government must create opportunities, institutions must provide quality education, parents must provide guidance, and our young people themselves must be prepared to seize the opportunities before them. We must work together to ensure that no talented young person is held back by a lack of opportunity,” he said.
The lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to people-oriented representation, particularly initiatives that improve access to education and create avenues for constituents to develop their capacities. He stressed that effective representation should ultimately be measured by its ability to improve lives and expand opportunities for the people.
Obioma also urged the youths of Umuahia South to remain hopeful about their future and to see themselves as active participants in the development of their communities rather than passive recipients of government interventions. He said their creativity and determination could become powerful instruments for social transformation when properly supported.
“Our youths deserve our confidence, our support and our investment. If we invest in their education, character, skills and aspirations today, we will reap the dividends in stronger families, productive communities and a better Nigeria tomorrow. The future we desire begins with the young people we choose to empower today,” Obioma declared.
He subsequently hailed the youths of Umuahia South and urged them to remain focused, patriotic and committed to excellence, assuring them that their aspirations remain an important part of the development agenda he seeks to advance through purposeful representation.
