The Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Obi Aguocha, has strongly defended the ongoing healthcare reforms in Abia State, stressing that public criticism must be grounded in honesty, firsthand knowledge, and a genuine commitment to truth.
Aguocha made the remarks while reacting to recent commentaries about developments in the state’s health sector, warning against what he described as misleading narratives from individuals who are far removed from the realities on the ground.
According to the federal lawmaker, it is deeply unfortunate when commentators who have not physically assessed the situation in Abia attempt to shape public opinion with interpretations that do not reflect the experiences of residents. He noted that credible analysis must be informed by direct engagement with the people and institutions involved, rather than speculation or selective interpretation of figures from afar.
Hon Aguocha drew attention to the approach taken by Arise News journalist Rufai Oseni, whom he commended for personally visiting the state after engaging with the Executive Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti. During the visit, Oseni reportedly toured key locations, interacted with residents, asked questions, and observed ongoing projects firsthand. The lawmaker described this as an example of responsible journalism that prioritizes verification and balanced assessment over assumptions.
The federal legislator emphasized that the present administration inherited a health sector that had suffered decades of neglect and structural decay. He explained that rebuilding such a system requires time, sustained investment, and deliberate planning. Despite the challenges, he maintained that significant progress is already visible across the state, particularly to residents who directly benefit from the reforms being implemented.
Highlighting specific developments, Aguocha pointed to the ongoing construction of the New Abia State Specialist Hospital in Amachara as a major step toward strengthening healthcare delivery. The project, according to him, reflects the determination of the administration to restore confidence in public medical institutions and provide modern facilities capable of meeting the healthcare needs of the people.
He further noted that more than 200 Primary Healthcare Centres across the state have undergone upgrades, while improvement works are also progressing at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital and several General Hospitals. These interventions, he said, represent a systematic effort by the state government to rebuild critical healthcare infrastructure that had deteriorated over many years.
While acknowledging that constructive criticism is an essential element of democratic governance, Obi Aguocha stressed that credibility and sincerity must guide public discourse. He cautioned that commentators who previously held strong partisan positions should not suddenly present themselves as neutral analysts without acknowledging their past biases.
The lawmaker concluded by urging observers and analysts who genuinely wish to understand developments in Abia to visit the state and assess the progress firsthand. According to him, the ongoing reforms under Gov Alex Otti demonstrate a clear commitment to rebuilding vital sectors and improving the quality of life for Abians, adding that those who truly care about the future of the state should support efforts aimed at sustainable development rather than promote narratives rooted in distance and misinformation.
