Former Abia governorship candidate and founder of the OAU foundation, Hon Onyekwere Akym Uche issued a strong call for responsible and accountable leadership across Nigeria.
Speaking against the backdrop of ongoing socio-economic challenges, Akym emphasized that the nation’s future hinges on leaders who prioritize service over personal ambition.
“Nigeria stands at a crossroads,” Akym said. “Our people face numerous challenges, from unemployment to insecurity, and what we need more than anything is leadership that is selfless, principled, and committed to the common good. Leadership must not be about power or position. It must be about service and impact.”
Akym highlighted that irresponsible leadership has historically undermined Nigeria’s progress, stressing the need for leaders who are transparent and accountable to the citizens.
“Too often, we have seen leaders prioritize personal gain over public service. This is not the leadership Nigeria deserves. We must cultivate a generation of leaders who are guided by integrity and a clear sense of responsibility to their people,” he said.
He also urged citizens to actively participate in governance by holding leaders accountable.
“Responsibility is a two-way street. Leaders must serve well, but citizens must also engage actively, demand accountability, and refuse to tolerate mediocrity or corruption. Democracy thrives when both sides fulfill their roles,” Akym remarked.
OAU also noted that nurturing responsible leadership begins at the grassroots level.
“Communities must support and encourage leaders who demonstrate integrity and vision. Leadership is not only in Abuja or state capitals. It begins in towns, villages, and local councils where the impact is felt most directly,” he explained.
He further pointed out that Nigeria’s potential can only be realized when leaders embrace policies that prioritize human development and economic growth.
“We have young, talented, and ambitious citizens across this nation. With responsible leadership, we can unleash this potential and build a Nigeria where opportunity is abundant and governance is just,” Akym stated.
In conclusion, the former governorship candidate stated;
“I remain optimistic because change is possible. We have the resources, the talent, and the youth to redefine leadership in Nigeria. What we need now is courage, integrity, and a commitment to the people above all else. Responsible leadership is not optional; it is essential for our survival and prosperity.”
