In a robust demonstration of legislative oversight, Hon. Emeka Obioma, Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, has reaffirmed the Assembly’s unwavering support for Governor Alex Otti’s vision of a transformed, transparent, and high-quality education sector.
As a member of the House Committee on Education, Hon. Obioma joined colleagues on an extensive oversight visit to key institutions and agencies in Abia State’s education sector, led by the Committee Chairman, Hon. Uchenna Okoro.
The exercise focused on strengthening accountability, improving service delivery, and ensuring that all institutions operate within government policy frameworks.
“Our visit to the Examinations Development Centre (EDC) was particularly encouraging,” Hon. Obioma stated.
“I am impressed with their successful conduct of the 2025 examinations, the improved ICT systems, and their strict adherence to the free-exam-fee directive. These achievements are a clear indication that our institutions are capable of delivering quality services when adequately supported.”
During the tour, the Committee also engaged with the Ministry of Tertiary Education, where discussions centered on improving academic standards, accreditation processes, and the overall performance of tertiary institutions.
Hon. Obioma emphasized the importance of policies that would produce globally competitive graduates.
“The Assembly remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen our tertiary institutions. Producing graduates who can compete on the global stage is not just a goal, it is a responsibility we must collectively uphold,” Hon. Obioma remarked.
The oversight team further visited the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, assessing curriculum implementation, teacher availability, and infrastructural needs.
Obioma highlighted the critical role of foundational education in building a strong society.
“At the core of every successful nation is a solid education system. Ensuring our children have access to quality basic education is non-negotiable, and it is why we are engaging directly with the institutions that make this possible,” he said.
The Committee’s assessment also extended to the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) and the Education Management Board (EMB). While acknowledging progress in school rehabilitation, teacher training, and procurement processes, Hon. Obioma stressed the need for improved monitoring and timely execution of projects.
“I commend ASUBEB and EMB for their dedication and the results achieved so far. However, there is room for more efficiency and transparency, and the Assembly will ensure that these areas are addressed through proper legislative oversight,” Obioma noted.
The Chief Whip concluded by assuring the people of Abia State that all findings from the oversight exercise will be documented and forwarded to the House for appropriate legislative action.
“We are fully aligned with Gov Alex Otti’s vision. Together, through collaboration between government and the legislature, we can transform education in Abia State and deliver better learning outcomes for every child,” he said.
