The Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has applauded the recent legislative victory achieved by Hon. Obi Aguocha in the House of Representatives as federal lawmakers approved key components of his motion aimed at reducing the soaring cost of airline tickets and air ambulance services across the country.
Recall that Hon. Aguocha’s Motion of Urgent National Importance, which secured overwhelming support in the green chamber, seeks to restore fairness, transparency, and affordability in Nigeria’s aviation sector, especially during festive seasons when millions of citizens travel across the country.
Reacting to the development, Hon. Akaliro described Aguocha’s success as a clear demonstration of responsive and people centred leadership. He praised the federal lawmaker for championing an issue that affects a wide spectrum of Nigerians, particularly families striving to reunite during the Christmas season.
In his remarks, Hon. Akaliro said the motion shows a deep understanding of the struggles faced by ordinary Nigerians.
“Hon. Obi Aguocha has once again shown that he is in tune with the realities of our people,” he stated. “The rising cost of flight tickets has placed unnecessary hardship on citizens who simply want to travel home to see their loved ones. His intervention is timely, strategic, and commendable.”
He further expressed confidence that the measures approved by the National Assembly, including the creation of a transparent assessment mechanism for airline operational costs and the planned tax relief structure for airline operators, will go a long way in stabilising prices and preventing exploitative practices by airline companies.
According to Akaliro, the motion reflects the kind of leadership Nigeria needs at all levels.
“What Hon. Aguocha has done is not just legislative work, it is advocacy rooted in compassion,” he added. “This is the type of representation we should all aspire to, where leaders use their platforms to protect the interests of the common man. I stand fully in support of this motion and the positive ripple effects it will have across the aviation sector.”
He also applauded the directive for the Central Bank of Nigeria to collaborate with airline operators in prioritising foreign exchange allocation at concessionary rates, noting that this single step has the potential to reduce operating costs and ultimately lower ticket prices.
Hon. Akaliro expressed optimism that the House Committee on Aviation, mandated to engage airline operators and relevant agencies, will deliver a robust report capable of shaping more lasting reforms.
The lawmaker concluded by urging stakeholders to work together to ensure successful implementation of the approved resolutions. He emphasised that affordable transportation remains essential for national unity, cultural preservation, and economic growth.
